Elämänkatsomustieto on kiusanteko-oppiaine

Erkki Hartikainen 28.12.2009

Vasta YK:n Genevessä toimivan ihmisoikeustoimikunnan puuttuminen asiaan sai silloisen kouluhallituksen muuttamaan opetusuunnitelman kunnolliseksi.

Lukioissa oppilaat saivat vapaata jäädessään pois uskonnonopetuksesta.

Kerron joskus toisella kertaa, miten minua niihin aikoihin kohdeltiin.

Talvipäivän seisauksen saarna

Erkki Hartikainen 21.12.2009

Kun tänään poltamme kokkoja talvipäivän seisauksen kunniaksi, on syytä kommentoida aihepiiriä käsittelevää keskustelua.

Keskustelun kunniaksi ja luettuani suuren määrän poliittisen henkilökemian historiaa (mm. kaikki Arvo Tuomisen kirjat, Boris Björkelundin muistelmat ja Nikita Hrustshevin muistelmat) julistan uuden kilpailun väärämielisten ateistien luokittelemiseksi.

Onko Erkki Hartikainen antikommunisti vai kommunisti eli sosialidemokraatin joulusaarna

Erkki Hartikainen 24.12.2009

Pessimisti

Vaikka olen vakaumuksellinen hyvinvointivaltion kannattaja, minusta valitettavasti tuntuu siltä, että hyvinvointivaltioita on jo jonkin aikaa ajettu voimaperäisesti alas. Obaman terveydenhoitouudistus jäänee Yhdysvaltojen viimeiseksi muutokseksi hyvinvointivaltion suuntaan.

Population Growth and Climate Change

Combined effect of global income growth (77%) and global population growth (69%); both drivers of increasing energy-related CO2 emissions.

The many ways Africans are dying

The Nigerian author, Ben Okri in his book, A Way of Being Free, said, “There are many ways to die, and not all of them have to do with extinction. A lot of them have to do with living. Living many lies. Living without asking questions. Living in the cave of your own prejudices. Living the life imposed on you, the dreams and codes of your ancestor’s”

Fundamentalist Alpha Course infiltrating more schools

Fri, 11 Dec 2009, NSS GB

The fundamentalist Christian Alpha Course is being operated in state schools up and down the country, drawing in children to its particular brand of literalist religious dogma – and all with the schools’ approval and support.

The NSS is receiving increasing numbers of complaints from parents who are alarmed by the number of evangelical groups that are being allowed into schools to spread intolerant religious teaching, but the Alpha course is by far the most organised and widespread.

The Times Educational Supplement last week reported the growing influence of Alpha in schools. It cited Archbishop Blanch CofE High School in Liverpool, where “Youth Alpha” courses have been running for 3 years and has had 300 pupils participating. It runs for eight weeks at lunchtime and is promoted throughout the school on notice boards and in assemblies.

The course was set up with the headteacher’s backing by Reverend Kate Wharton, the Bishop of Liverpool’s appointee on the school’s board of governors. She claims that the Alpha Course is a “balanced introduction” to Christianity.

What she does not mention is its homophobia and the final sinister “holy spirit” session that encourages participants to speak in tongues and behave hysterically.

Terry Sanderson, President of the National Secular Society, said: “This is real fundamentalist stuff all wrapped up in reassuring words and delivered by a bloke in a jumper with a permanent smile who looks remarkably like Tony Blair. This is not a ‘balanced introduction’ to anything; it is a carefully planned attempt to push people in a very specific direction. It is deeply manipulative and has no place in schools paid for by the taxpayer.”

Quoted in the TES, Jonathan Bartley of the Ekklesia Christian “think tank” said the courses deal with doctrine rather than Christianity as a way of life. “It’s about sin, hell and resurrection and what people must do to get to heaven. I would be very worried about the adult content being used in schools unless it has been heavily modified.” He said that Governing bodies of “faith schools” (who are mostly representatives of the local diocese) are “overstepping the mark” in pushing these courses in schools.

Keith Porteous Wood, Executive Director of the NSS, told the TES: “We have pupils, a captive audience, funnelled into hardline proselytising on school premises. These schools should be seeking permission from parents, but I’ll bet they aren’t.”

Atheists in office: Déjà vu all over again

By Herb Silverman  |  December 14, 2009;

I'm reminded of my South Carolina experience when I hear that some folks in Asheville, North Carolina want to remove Cecil Bothwell from City Council. What he and I have in common is not just that we are atheists, but that we are open about it. The constitutions of both North and South Carolina bar atheists from holding public office.

I first heard about the South Carolina exclusion in 1990. I'm no constitutional scholar, but I knew that Article 6 of our U.S. Constitution explicitly states that there may be no religious tests for public office. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1961 that this provision also applies to the states. So I assumed this was just an anachronism, and could easily be changed. I was wrong. I wound up to running for public office, first as a gubernatorial candidate and then as a notary public, in order to challenge this unconstitutional provision. It took eight years and a unanimous verdict of the South Carolina Supreme Court to state the obvious, that no religious test for public office may be applied, not even in South Carolina.

Our state wasted about $100,000 trying to keep me from becoming a notary public. None of the political leaders in South Carolina, and certainly not the lawyers advising them, believed they would prevail legally if I continued to pursue my case. Yet, those same politicians showed that they would rather waste time and money on a lost cause than risk the wrath and lose the votes of the state's well-organized religious right. But South Carolina is known as a state that fights lost causes. Et tu, North Carolina?

Atheists are now eligible to run for any office in South Carolina, which means the provision against atheists is unenforceable. However, the South Carolina Constitution can only be amended by a referendum in which the majority of voters approve the change. This is not likely to happen anytime soon. It took a referendum in 1998 for South Carolina to remove its anti-miscegenation laws from the State Constitution. Even then, 38% of South Carolinians voted against allowing blacks and whites to marry, though the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1967 that states could no longer prevent interracial marriage.

I noticed in recent newspaper articles that both Bothwell and I were called "avowed" atheists, though neither of us had taken vows. I once had a discussion with a public editor about why the local paper always put an adjective before "atheist," but did not apply one to people of religious faiths. I was told it was unnecessary for those who belonged to communities of worship, but the newspaper had only the word of one person who says he or she is an atheist. I asked which is more likely, that a religious person in this country would pretend to be an atheist or that an atheist would pretend to be religious? The paper conceded I had a point, but it continues to "avow" me. Even worse, I've been introduced on radio as a "so-called atheist" or an "admitted atheist." I wonder what the reaction would be were someone introduced as a "so-called Jew" or an "admitted Southern Baptist."

What Bothwell and I also have in common is that some people judge us more by our beliefs than by our behavior. H.K. Edgerton, a North Carolina voter, is threatening a lawsuit to remove Bothwell from office. Here is one of his reasons: "I have problems with people who don't believe in God." Edgerton continued, "I'm not saying that Cecil Bothwell is not a good man." This reminds me of the time in 2003 I was invited to give an invocation at a Charleston, South Carolina, City Council meeting. As I got up to speak, half the council members walked out because they knew I was an atheist. Those who stayed to listen said my invocation was fine.

One councilman justified the walkout by quoting from Psalm 14: "The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God.' They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is not one who does good." He then told me it was not personal. In other words, his religious beliefs compelled him to ignore or demonize an entire class of people he was elected to represent. Frankly, I would rather it had been personal.

That walkout vividly showed that we are still engaged in one of the last civil rights struggles in which blatant discrimination is viewed as acceptable behavior. Of course, bigotry exists everywhere, but it is especially lamentable when government officials defend public acts of intolerance at government functions. What would have been the reaction had city council members walked out because a Jew, a Muslim, or a Buddhist was giving an invocation?

Prior to 1990, I was apathetic about my atheism, feeling I had better things to do than talk about the nonexistence of gods. When I began to view atheism as a civil right issue, I helped found the Secular Coalition for America, whose mission is to increase the visibility of, and respect for, nontheistic viewpoints. The Secular Coalition held a contest for people to nominate the person they believed was the highest-ranking elected leader with no god beliefs. As a result, Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.) became the first in the history of Congress to publicly acknowledge he doesn't believe in God. Does anyone think there aren't scores more who feel the political need to remain in their atheist and agnostic closets? It is my hope that one day politicians like Cecil Bothwell and others will be judged on the content of their character and the issues they find important, rather than on their professed religious beliefs. That would be my idea of true religious freedom.

Minarets

The Swiss are not hampering the practice of any religion, far from that and temples of any sort are accepted and built in all Cantons (provinces).

Sermons of any faith can be listened (at day-light hours!) from official radio stations (unlike in Italy where - except Catholics - these are grouped late in the night).

Their point is twofold:

1) the purpose of minarets as well as catholic bell towers is to call believers to their respective functions and they use loud bells or rabbi shouting (minarets).

This fact may produce noise to non-believers particularly in early and late hours.

In fact the use of bells (Catholics) is forbidden in almost all Cantons! but nobody hampers priests to send sms to call adepts! (several claims have been reported to Italian Courts by close-by dwellers for excessive bell noise, especially at 6-7am!); should also be mentioned that houses close to bell towers show a lesser value!

Noteworthy is the fact that washing machines in CH cannot be installed in apartments but they are placed in purposely built spaces in the basement; all this to avert noise to neighbours.

2) a lesser reason is the architectural discrepancy compared to the Swiss landscape.

Mosques and Minarets

Swiss Vote Reveals European Concerns

By Father John Flynn, LC

ROME, DEC. 6, 2009 (Zenit.org <http://www.zenit.org> ).- Switzerland’s referendum on banning the construction of minarets for mosques raised once more the issue of the growing Islamic presence in Western Europe. According to final results, 57.5% of voters and a majority of cantons voted in favor of the ban.

There are an estimated 200 mosques and prayer rooms in Switzerland, mainly in disused factories and warehouses, according to a report by the news agency Swissinfo on Nov. 29. Only four of these have a minaret.

As ZENIT reported on Dec. 1 the Swiss bishops criticized the minaret ban. In a communiqué published Sunday, the Swiss bishops' conference stated that the move, "represents an obstacle and a great challenge on the path of integration in dialogue and mutual respect."

Fortunately just before the Swiss referendum Stefano Allievi, an Italian sociologist at the University of Padua, published a report on mosques, titled: “Conflicts Over Mosques in Europe: Policy Issues and Trends.”

Published under the auspices of the Network of European Foundations, the report started by noting the various controversies in Europe raised by the presence of Islam.

-- Conflicts about principles and ideas: from the Rushdie affair in Britain to the cartoons affair in Denmark.

-- Conflicts brought about by dramatic events happening in Europe concerning Islam and caused by Islamic terrorism and its consequences in European countries.

-- Controversies frequently raised and discussed in public debate relating to gender issues, for example on the role of women in Islam.

Worship

Turning to the issue of mosques, Allievi explained that this matter is not limited to the establishment of places of worship, but also involves the question of their visibility in European cities, which has an evident symbolic value.

Then, there is the matter of the broadcasting of the adhan, the call to prayer, from mosques to the areas surrounding them, as well as the issue of Muslim cemeteries and the right to obtain religiously exclusive areas within existing cemeteries.

It’s a mistake, the report commented, to interpret these conflicts as if it were just something stemming from action by “political fearmongers.” At stake, Allievi continued, are questions of deep social and cultural import.

Historically, the matter of places for Islamic worship was linked to the presence of Islamic workers who arrived in Europe starting several decades ago.

Initially, Allievi explained, prayer halls appeared in the foyers of buildings where the workers lived or were employed. By the end of the 1970s and especially the 1980s, there was a gradual spread of prayer halls, which was partly the result of a growing awareness that this was a permanent migration, the report commented. With time the number of prayer halls multiplied and there were increasing concentrations of Muslims in the local communities.

As a consequence in large cities, especially the capital cities, large purpose-built Islamic centers were constructed. This was normally done with finance from external resources, the report noted, which was often from the Muslim World League, an organization under the control of Saudi Arabia.

Outside of the capital cities the mosques that were eventually built tended to be located in the industrial suburbs, where it was easier to find buildings of sufficient size to adapt to these purposes, or in ethnic neighborhoods, on the outskirts of a big city.

Numbers

A section of Allievi’s report examined the matter of how many mosques are present in Europe. He also compared the total number of Muslim inhabitants to the number of mosques.

In the area of Western Europe he calculated that there are 18.06 million Muslims and 10,869 mosques, roughly equivalent to one mosque for every 1,660 Muslims.

This is, he noted, a ration roughly comparable to the situation in many Muslim countries or, in Europe, to places of worship of the dominant Christian religion in the respective countries.

He then excluded the data on Bosnia, where Islam is a historically established presence and also Thrace, where there is also a historical Muslim minority. The result was a total of 8,701 mosques serving a world of Islamic immigration made up of approximately 16.44 million people, corresponding to one prayer room for every 1,890 Muslims living in Europe. “The figure may seem surprising, given the widespread assumption that Muslim places of worship are few in number,” Allievi commented.

While this popular impression may still be true for some countries exposed to more recent immigration phenomena, it is not true in terms of the European average, he added.

Then, the report continued, if we compare these figures to the people of Muslim origin who actually practice their religion, which is about one-third according to a recent study he cited, the number of Muslims per mosque is of course significantly lower. “Therefore, there is no problem of a lack of places of worship,” he concluded.

The report then turned to look at the situation in those countries where the Islamic presence is particularly notable.

In France, Muslims account for about 5.5 million people, or 8% of the population. There are approximately 2,100 Islamic places of worship in the country. This is proportionally lower than in other countries, but the report explained this figure is similar to that of other religions and is testimony to the impact of the secular and republican ideology in the life of the country.

Proportion

Germany comes second behind France in the ranking of European countries for the number of Muslims -- 3.2 to 3.4 million -- even though the proportion in relation to the overall population is considerably lower, at about 3%.

The absolute number of mosques, however, is the highest in Europe (at least 2,600), the report affirmed. In fact, the ratio between the number of mosques and the number of Muslims is the highest in Europe, excluding Bosnia, and their presence is significant and highly visible, according to Allievi.

In the United Kingdom the proportion of mosques is significant when we take into account that the estimated 2.4 million Muslims have over 1,000 mosques, the report commented. As well, many mosques are purpose-built, especially in the large ethnic communities around the country. Thus, there are 116 mosques in Birmingham, of which 10 are purpose-built, for a total of 140,000 Muslims. There are 44 in Bradford, of which six are purpose-built, for the city’s 75,000 Muslims. And there are 31 in Manchester, of which five are purpose-built, for 125,000 Muslims.

Overall, the proportion of mosques is twice the European average, with almost one mosque for every 1,000 Muslims.

It’s also possible to frequently find Islamic prayer rooms and other forms of religious facility in a wide range of places: airports, shopping centers, and meeting places of various kinds, including football stadiums.

Further on in the report it observed that the minaret “appears to have become a symbol par excellence of the conflict surrounding Islam, or rather of its visibility in the public eye.”

Allievi commented that historically towers have always been a sign of power and domination.

For example, in medieval Italian cities the victory of a family or a city over another resulted in the destruction of the towers of the defeated party.

He concluded by saying that the mosques in themselves are not the problem, but rather there are the problems related to an increasing cultural and religious plurality that is now producing not only a quantitative but also a qualitative change in European states.

How Europe deals with this situation will continue to be a topic of much interest in coming years.

The proposal put forward in the canton of Geneva is aimed at reuniting all dead, irrespective of anyone's religion, in a single cemetery - given that its administration is the responsibility of the public administration which is non-confessional.

Critics of Cecil Bothwell cite N.C. bar to atheists

By Jordan Schrader
December 8, 2009

North Carolina's constitution is clear:

politicians who deny the existence of God are barred from holding office.

Opponents of Cecil Bothwell are seizing on that law to argue he should not be seated as a City Council member today, even though federal courts have ruled religious tests for public office are unlawful under the U.S. Constitution.

Voters elected the writer and builder to the council last month.

"I'm not saying that Cecil Bothwell is not a good man, but if he's an atheist, he's not eligible to serve in public office, according to the state constitution," said H.K. Edgerton, a former Asheville NAACP president.

Article 6, section 8 of the state constitution says: "The following persons shall be disqualified for office: First, any person who shall deny the being of Almighty God."

Rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution trump the restriction in the state constitution, said Bob Orr, executive director of the N.C. Institute for Constitutional Law.

"I think there's any number of federal cases that would view this as an imposition of a religious qualification and violate separation of church and state," said Orr, a former state Supreme Court justice.

In 1961, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Maryland's requirement for officials to declare belief in God violated the freedom of religion guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Additionally, Article VI of the U.S. Constitution says: "no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."

Bothwell's campaign treasurer, Jake Quinn, said everyone should be entitled to their own beliefs.

"The test occurred on (Nov. 3)," Quinn said. "It was called an election."

Fliers mailed before the election criticized Bothwell over his atheism and his book, "The Prince of War," which denounces evangelist and Montreat resident the Rev. Billy Graham for pushing what Bothwell says is a theocratic agenda.

Now, denizens of Internet message boards and the blogosphere are arguing over whether he can legally serve.

Edgerton said City Council should hold off swearing Bothwell into office until a constitutional question can be resolved.

"If they go ahead, then the city of Asheville and the board of elections could be liable for a lawsuit," said Edgerton, who is known for promoting "Southern heritage" by standing on streets decked out in a Confederate soldier's uniform and holding a Confederate flag.

Bothwell didn't respond Monday to requests for an interview, but he wrote in an e-mail to the Citizen-Times: "I am not 'an avowed atheist.'"

He has told the Citizen-Times in the past he believes in the Golden Rule, not a deity.

Bothwell labels himself an atheist on his MySpace page, though he wrote in an online post last week on fellow incoming councilman Gordon Smith's blog, Scrutiny Hooligans, that he prefers the term "post-theist."

Bothwell added: "I don't 'deny the being of Almighty God;' I simply consider the question of denial or acceptance irrelevant.

"Could make for a very interesting court case, seems to me."

Staff writer Dale Neal contributed to this report.

Additional Facts

TWO OATHS OF OFFICE

North Carolina officeholders, including the Asheville City Council members to be sworn in today, may take one of two oaths of office:

SWEAR:

"I, (name), do solemnly and sincerely swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States; that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the State of North Carolina, and to the constitutional powers and authorities which are or may be established for the government thereof; and that I will endeavor to support, maintain and defend the Constitution of said State, not inconsistent with the Constitution of the United States, to the best of my knowledge and ability; so help me God."

AFFIRM:

"I, (name), do solemnly and sincerely affirm that I will support the Constitution of the United States; that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the State of North Carolina, and to the constitutional powers and authorities which are or may be established for the government thereof; and that I will endeavor to support, maintain and defend the Constitution of said State, not inconsistent with the Constitution of the United States, to the best of my knowledge and ability."

Affirming, rather than swearing, also exempts an officeholder from a requirement in North Carolina law to "lay his hand upon the Holy Scriptures, in token of his engagement to speak the truth and in further token that, if he should swerve from the truth, he may be justly deprived of all the blessings of that holy book and made liable to that vengeance which he has imprecated on his own head."

War on Solstice? Celebrate!

(Cranford, NJ). 'Tis the season for celebrating, and we should all rejoice, according to American Atheists, Inc. As President Ed Buckner notes, "Claims abound that both Thanksgiving and Christmas are Christian in origin, but in fact both are grounded in non-Christian ideas and rituals that the churches have co-opted for their own purposes.

CHRISTMAS - Christianity is not the first, nor even the tenth religion to co-opt the Winter Solstice as their own holiday. For example, the Pagan festival of Yule (as in 'Yuletide') was a celebrated winter event centuries before Jesus' alleged birth. Indeed, nearly every tradition currently associated with Christmas has non-Christian roots.

As an educational organization, American Atheists urges all Christians to ask their ministers why December 25 was chosen to celebrate Jesus' birth (enjoy the hemming and hawing).

WINTER SOLSTICE the celestial event that started it all has been measured and celebrated since man first looked up. The solstice affects all life on earth, and the human traditions surrounding it are rich and plentiful.

While Christmas is a Christian holiday, the Solstice is the real 'reason for the season', and it belongs to everyone. A small, well-funded, and vocal minority of Christians are unhappy with the fact that their holiday has not totally eclipsed all others. They want all other celebrations squashed out, in an effort to make the season uniquely

Christian, and organize protests and boycotts against any company which promotes an all-encompassing tolerant attitude ("Happy Holidays" vs "Merry Christmas").

American Atheists acknowledges that such views are only shared by an ignorant and bigoted minority of Christians, but at the same time we look to the more tolerant Christians to quell this attitude.

As it is with Islam, the health and growth of Christianity depends on those within the church.

Atheists and others who demand strict separation of church and state seek only to prevent government agents from deciding, for anyone, whether or how to celebrate the season.

The multitude of seasonal celebrations underscores the importance of the government's neutrality.

Atheists enjoy parties, celebrations, presents, and life.

To those who celebrate America's diversity, we extend our heartfelt wishes for a wonderful season.

To those who selfishly try to claim the whole season as their own, we wish a lousy one.

What to do during the Christmas season?

December marks key religious holidays for religious groups in America, particularly with the Christian celebration known as "Christmas."

A growing segment of Americans, however, do not embrace religion. Surveys indicate that nearly 15% of us embrace "no religion."

Within this category (known as "the seculars") are Millions of Atheists, Freethinkers, Humanists and others.

They are increasingly visible, especially over the debate dubbed "the war on Christmas."

There are now over 270 billboards throughout the country carrying messages like "It's OK to not believe," and "Be Good for Goodness Sake."

Many of these nonbelievers celebrate a remarkable natural event -- the Winter Solstice, that time of the year when the sun reaches its lowest point in the annual journey across the sky as seen from the Northern Hemisphere.

The 2009 Solstice occurs on Monday, December 21.

Long before the alleged birth of Jesus Christ, humans observed the Summer and Winter Solstices as markers in the routine of daily life.

Many nonbelievers enjoy parties with friend and family, giving gifts, even putting up decorations -- including Solstice trees -- to mark this event.

Madalyn Murray O'Hair, founder of American Atheists, called for the recognition of Solstice and Equinox as "natural holidays" uniting all of humanity, an alternative to the disputatious religious celebrations of competing faiths.

Today, American Atheists complements its mission on behalf of civil rights and state-church separation with efforts to encourage the cultural shift toward the recognition and celebration of the Winter Solstice.

We sell books, decorations, and our famous Winter Solstice Greeting Cards (http://atheists.org/atheism/solstice)

If your news organization would like further information on the growing celebration of Solstice in America, feel free to contact us.

We can also refer you to some of the many, many Atheist families throughout the nation that observe this "natural holiday," and celebrate life, friends, families and nature.

Proposal for An International De-Baptism Day or A World Apostasy Day

To secular associations around the world

Dear Friends,

Ten years ago our association obtained legal recognition of the Italian citizen's right to renounce the religion to which he or she formally belongs.

Since then we estimate that between fifteen thousand and twenty thousand Italians have officially withdrawn from the Catholic Church, thus drawing attention to an act that is now referred to in Italian as sbattezzo or 'debaptism'.

Unfortunately we are not able to furnish exact figures on the number of persons who have taken this step, because every request is presented by an individual rather than by an organization, and because other groups (some of them connected with other religious denominations) have begun promoting the practice as well.

Our estimates are based on the number of persons who have visited our site and downloaded the form that UAAR has prepared (at present, more than four thousand per month) and the number of citizens who have contacted us for information specifically on this point (an average of five per day).

In order to better understand the dimensions of the phenomenon, which reflect significant developments in contemporary society, and to raise public awareness, in 2008 UAAR organized the first National Debaptism Day (25 October), during which 1,032 citizens (most of them members of our organization) participated by submitting their request to be debaptised.

This was followed by the second National Debaptism Day held on 25 October 2009 in which 820 citizens (the majority of whom were not members of UAAR) participated.

The debaptism movement is attracting increasing interest abroad as well as in Italy.

Below you will find a list of links to reports in the international media on this phenomenon.

The French media (France Press and Channel 3) mistakenly referred to an "international debaptism day". As yet no such event has yet been organized, but it seems to us an excellent idea.

If in 2010 secular associations around the world could coordinate an international day of apostasy, we believe that the public impact would be considerable.

It is for this reason that we are contacting you. We are eager to know whether the idea is of interest and if you think it would be feasible.

If there is sufficient interest then we could decide in concert how to organize such an event.

With our warmest regards,
Raffaele Carcano
Secretary, UAAR

Uganda death penalty for gays

An Atheist public policy group today called up lawmakers linked to the Christian group supporting a Uganda death penalty for gays proposal, and a mega-church pastor who delivered the invocation at President Obama's inauguration to speak out about the controversial proposal.

Lawmakers in Uganda -- where homosexuality is already punishable -- have crafted legislation that would stiffen penalties and include even the sentence of death for The measure has been proposed by an official linked to the international Christian group that operates the notorious house on C-Street in Washington, DC which is a spiritual retreat and residence for key religious-right members of Congress.

Journalist Jeff Sharlet exposed the group in his best-selling book "The Family."

Ed Buckner, President of American Atheists, has encouraged an official government probe into the activities of the C-Street politicians, dubbed "the Christian Mafia."

"We need to hear where these officials stand on this outrageous legislation, and whether they intend to continue their close personal and political involvement with the Christian organization behind the C-Street residence," said Buckner.

Buckner also called upon Rick Warren, the mega-church pastor who delivered the invocation at President Obama's inauguration.

Warren, who has a record of anti-gay statements, has been trying to alter his public image and be seen as a more tolerant and moderate preacher.

"So far, he has backed off about making any definitive statement on the Uganda death penalty plan," said Buckner.

Dave Silverman, Communications Director and Vice President for American Atheists, suggested that the C-Street politicians -- a list which includes Reps. Zach Wamp, R-Tenn.; Bart Stupak, D-Mich.; Jim DeMint, R-S.C.; Mike Doyle, D-Pa.; and Sens. John Ensign, R-Nev. and Sam Brownback, R-Kan.-- need to clarify where they stand on the proposed Uganda legislation, and how this might affect their votes on gay rights legislation for Americans.

"If 'The Family' continues to support this strident anti-gay agenda, these American lawmakers -- who took an oath to support the Constitution of the United States -- should consider resigning, and speak out against this kind of bigoted sentiment," said Mr. Silverman.

Letters

Jesus is a total fabrication

"A brilliant case. Your work is first rate."
Gore Vidal

"I agree with you one hundred percent that the biblical Jesus is a total fabrication. I had always thought so as a hunch after some casual investigation, but you make the case beyond possible doubt."

Ralph Anspach, Distinguished Professor of Economics Emeritus, San Francisco State University.

"Yours is the first statement, since Albert Schweitzer's at the beginning of the 20th Century, that Christianity will have to surrender the historicity of Jesus."

Professor G.A. Wells, Birbeck College, University of London (Wells is one of the foremost biblical scholars in the world and the author of such classic works on Jesus as Did Jesus Exist?).

"The Case Against 'Jesus' is the most complete historical and archaeological examination of the "Jesus" character ever written.

Once you have read this book, you will be convinced beyond all doubt that the Jesus of the gospels is a totally contrived, imaginary character whose existence is comparable to Humpty Dumpty, the Wizard of Oz, Superman, and numerous other mythical characters.

This is a book that belongs on the shelf of every freethinker and, if at all possible, on the shelf of every member of the Christian clergy and theologian who has been indoctrinated into believing in the fairy tale of a realistic Jesus.

This book will contribute to a better understanding of what the early Christian religionists did in order to concoct one of the most devious deceptions in the history of civilization.

I cannot see how any religious apologist can find any opposing rational argument against the facts and history which Burton Wolfe so intelligently exposes in regard to the never was-never existed "Jesus" of the gospels."

Leland W. Ruble, Editor-Publisher, Perceptive Freethought

"You may not call yourself a scholar, but you certainly have done a great deal of honest scholarly research...It often takes so-called 'amateurs' such as yourself to get us so-called 'scholars' to see that the Emperor has no clothes!...You have many excellent scholars who support you in your view that no Talmudic reference to Jesus is trustworthy...Why would a Jew admit that Jesus even lived?...I believe that you are to be commended for stressing the importance of the issue of whether Jesus ever lived, inasmuch as the existence of Jesus is the sine qua non for Christianity..."

Louis H. Feldman, Professor of Classics, Yeshiva University, New York (Feldman is renowned as one of the foremost translators of the histories attributed to the First-Century historian Flavius Josephus, into whose works the early Catholics dumped brief forgeries referring to Jesus, James, and John the baptizer).

"The Case Against "Jesus" is the most important book on Christian religion ever produced.

It makes all other books on the subjects of Jesus and Christian religion irrelevant.

The book proves, by irrefutable evidence, that "Jesus Christ" is nothing more than an invention of ancient Hebrew scribes and that the entire New Testament consists of fiction.

The revelations in this book are shattering to the beliefs of Christians or anyone who has thought of the Jesus story as historical fact. The truth had to come out sometime, and now that Burton Wolfe has proved that the story is fiction, all believers will have to face that fact."

Susan B. Loebl, President, Boca Home Medical Supplies.

"When Burton Wolfe tackles a subject, he produces the definitive work on that subject. His book The Hippies (New American Library) was and remains the definitive book about that phenomenon. His book Pileup on Death Row (Doubleday) was and remains the definitive book on capital punishment and what causes the lengthy stays and appeals of prisoners under sentence of death. And now Wolfe has produced the definitive book on "Jesus" and Christian religion."

28-vuotiaan miehen kristilliset hautajaiset saivat yllättävän käänteen Helsingissä, kun vainajan muslimisukulaiset saapuivat haudalle ja ottivat hautajaiset johtoonsa.

Paikalle Malmin hautausmaalle saapui myös imaami, joka luki hautarukouksen arabiaksi, piti puheen englanniksi ja pyyhki pastorin kappelissa muotoileman hiekkaristin pois arkun päältä.
- Minusta tuntui, etä he ottivat hautajaiset haltuun.

Liittovaltuusto
Liittohallitus

AVOIN KIRJE

Aivan uskomatonta!

Tällä kertaa minun tapauksessani onkin asia aivan toinen.

Paskantamisoikeus takaisin ihmisoikeuksiin

Vaikka on ilmiselvästi hyvin vaikeaa järjestää maailman lisääntyvälle väestölle lisää ruokaa, paskantamisoikeus on sitäkin helpompaa järjestää.

Virtsaaminen suoritettiin talon nurkan takana.

Näissä paikoissa kasvillisuus on nykyään runsasta.

Ateisti on henkilö, jonka mielestä ateismi on tosi.

Agnostikon eli jumalaongelmaisen määritelmä

Agnostikko eli jumalaongelmainen on henkilö, joka ei mielestään tiedä, onko ateismi tosi vai onko teismi tosi.

Uskonnon määritelmä

Uskonto on järjestäytynyttä teismiä.
