Toiwomus Talwen Jumala Ärjyläiselle

Erkki Hartikainen 30.12.2016

Järjestä Wäinämöisen weljelle Soinille Waikeuksia ensi Wuonna.

Mikä on Ärjämöinen?

Erkki Hartikainen 29.12.2016

Ärjämöinen on muinaissuomalainen talven jumala.

Suomenkielisistä lähteistä haet tätä tietoa turhaan. 1700 - luvun ruotsalaiset mytologian tutkijat tunsivat jo Ärjämöisen, ja saksalaiset kielitieteilijät selvittivät jo kauan sitten, että Ärjämöinen on muinaissuomalainen talven jumala.

Eri maiden viranomaiset väärentävät englanninkielistä wikipediaa

Erkki Hartikainen 28.12.2016

Ihmettelin eräitä suomenkielisen Wikipedian törkeitä vääristelyjä. Sitten huomasin, että vääristelyt olivat tökeröitä suomennoksia englanninkielisen Wikipedian vääristelyistä.

Wikipedia on vääristelty monista syistä.

Kun me, joilla on ensikäden tietoja, kuolemme, Wikpedia muuntaa historiaa fiktioksi.

Onneksi Jave jättää pääkaupunkiseudulla yhden apteekin jouluksi auki

Erkki Hartikainen 27.12.2016

Kondomiskandaali ravisuttaa Maltan ritarikuntaa – paavi määräsi tutkinnan

Lisätty 25.12.2016

Suvereenin valtion tavoin toimiva ritarikunta on erottanut varajohtajansa. Hänen epäillään katsoneen sormiensa läpi kondomien jakamista Afrikassa.

Paavi Fransiscus on määrännyt sisäisen tutkinnan Maltan ritarikuntaa repivän skandaalin vuoksi. Ritarikunta erotti varajohtajansa, mikä on johtanut vakaviin ristiriitoihin keskiajalta peräisin olevassa järjestössä.

Italialaisen Il Messaggero -sanomalehden mukaan kiista juontaisi juurensa siitä, että suurkansleri, vapaaherra Albrecht von Boeselager olisi sallinut kondomien jakamisen humanitaariseen apuun keskittyvän ritarikunnan toimipisteissä Afrikassa.

Katolinen kirkko on kieltänyt kondomien käytön ehkäisyvälineenä, mutta osa katolisista papeista ja nunnista on sallinut kondomien käytön aidsin runtelemilla alueilla.

LÄNSI-UUDENMAAN ATEISTIT TÄYTTI 40 VUOTTA (19.12016)

Lisätty 24.12.2016

Lohjan seudun vapaa-ajattelijat r.y. (125867) perustettiin Lohjalla 14.12.1976

Perustajajäsenet ovat Erkki Juhani Hartikainen, Niilo Anselm Kyllönen, Veikko Juhani Nykänen, Pekka Tapio Rytkönen ja Peter Alfred Zukale. Yhdistyksen puheenjohtajaksi valittiin Hartikainen.

Tämän kirjoittaja hyväksyttiin yhdistyksen jäseneksi 21.4.1977. Olen nyt yhdistyksessä pisimpään jäsenenä ollut henkilö.

Yhdistys merkittiin yhdistysrekisteriin 4.8.1978.

Yhdistyksen jäsenyys Vapaa-ajattelijain liitto ry:ssä vahvistettiin 6.11.2005. Yhdistyksen uudet säännöt hyväksyttiin 3.12.2005 ja merkittiin rekisteriin 4.9.2006. Yhdistys muutti nimensä Länsi-Uudenmaan ateistit ry:ksi.

Vuonna 2016 yhdistys on tähän mennessä saanut kuusi uutta jäsenhakemusta, joista kolme on johtanut jäsenyyteen.

Jumalanpilkkaoikeuden-käynti Raumalla

Onko tämä totta vuonna 2016?

Lisätty 22.12.2016

Ikävä kyllä on.

Islam on ihmisoikeuksien pahin sortaja maailmassa.

Syyteharkinta on tehty valtakunnansyyttäjän virastossa.

Mies on kiistänyt kiihottamisen kansanryhmää vastaan.

Suomen kaikkien aikojen tunnetuin filosofi Edvard Westermarck pitäisi herättää henkiin.

Venäjän suurlähettiläs tapettiin Ankarassa – ”Jumala on suuri”, julisti turkkilaiseksi poliisiksi tunnistettu ampuja

Venäjä on tukenut Syyriaa iskuissa Aleppon kaupunkia vastaan.

VENÄJÄN Turkin-suurlähettiläs Andrei Karlov kuoli maanantaina Ankarassa aseellisen hyökkäyksen jälkeen, vahvisti Venäjän ulkoministeriö.

Iskussa haavoittui samalla useita muita. Kyse on poikkeuksellisesta iskusta diplomaattia vastaan.

Itse lopetin turhan näppäilyn kauan sitten opettaessani toetokoneiden ohjelmointia.

Teos on ehditty kääntää jo 40 kielelle.

bakunin

111-sivuisen kirjan kustansi turkulainen Kustannusosakeyhtiö Savukeidas, suomentaja on Jaana Seppänen.

Valta-asema turmelee ihmisen aina. Ihminen on vapaa vasta toistenkin ollessa vapaita.

Hanki lupakirja ja kangistu

Bakuninin ajattelua ja toimintaa läpäisi valtava elämän voima. Kangistuminen vaanii jokaista, vähäpätöisestä papista aina nerokkaisiin tiedemiehiin saakka.

Mielettömyyksistä hirviömäisin on kristillinen mielettömyys.

Bakunin kuoli Bernissä, Sveitsissä. Hänen hautansa on kaupungissa olevalla Bremgartenin hautausmaalla.

Teos suomennettiin jo kauan sitten

Vapaa-ajattelijoiden kustannusyhtiö Kustannus Oy Vapaa Ajattelija Ab, jonka ”kukkoslovakit” myöhemmin tyhjensivät varoista, tuhosivat ja hautasivat, aikoi julkaista Jumala ja valtio -teoksen jo kauan sitten. Tämä tapahtui ollessani yhtiön toimitusjohtaja. Olin toimitusjohtajana ensin 13.5.1984-20.9.1984 siivomassa ensimmäisen toimitusjohtaja Jouni Kokkosen sotkuja ja käynnistämässä kustannustoimintaa. Toisen jakson olin toimitusjohtajana 7.1.1988-18.4.1998. Jakso alkoi aloittaessani Vapaa-ajattelijain liiton toimiston- ja taloudenhoitajana 1.1.1988. ”Kukkoslovakien” pilattua liiton toimintakulttuurin, luovuin toimitusjohtajan tehtävistä.

Kolmas uskoville suunnattu, tämän ministeriön avustusmuoto on uskovien keskinäiseen vuoropuheluun osoitettu avustus. Sitä jaetaan tänä vuonna ensi kertaa. Määrärahan suuruus on 80.000 euroa. 20. Filoksenia r.y.

Tavalliset suomalaiset unohtavat usein pahimman sensuurimuurin: kielimuurin.

Uuden yhdistyksen nimi on Fraternidad Cívica-Cementerio Civil (Siviiliveljeys-Siviilihautausmaa).

La Almudena on Euroopan suurin hautausmaa (pinta-ala noin 120 ha, hautoja noin viisi miljoonaa). Kunnostustoimien arvioidaan maksavan 16 miljoonaa euroa.

Haudattuina on kaikenlaista väkeä yhteiskunnan kaikista kerroksista. On Kuuban itsenäisyyssodan (1895-1898) ja sisällissodan (1936-1939) uhreja, on koleran uhreja. On Francon diktatuurin ampumat kolmetoista ruusua. He olivat 18-29-vuotiaita naisia, nuorsosialisteja, jotka teloitettiin 5.8.1939 hautausmaan vanhaa muuria vastaan.

Joku kuvasta närkästynyt teki valituksen Saudi-Arabian uskonnolliselle poliisille, joka lopulta pidätti naisen, The Guardian -lehti kertoo paikalliseen uutislähteeseen nojaten.

Shehri poisti Twitter-tilinsä kohun seurauksena.

RIADIN POLIISI kertoi nuoren naisen pidätyksestä maanantaina.

Poliisin tiedottaja Fawaz al-Maiman sanoi poliisin noudattaneen velvollisuuttaan valvoa ”yleisen moraalin rikkomista”, uutistoimisto AFP kertoo.

Oikeuskansleri Jaakko Jonkka antoi 1.12.2016 päivätyn vastauksensa [PDF] kanteluni ratkaisuna kirjeeseeni 24.11.2016, josta kerroin uutisessani Kirjelmöimme oikeuskanslerille uusien ministerien virkavaloja vastaan [HTML].

Syytä olisi samalla poistaa laista koko virkavala.

Lähetin oikeuskanslerin vastauksen heti 9.12.2016 tiedoksi niille samoille tahoille, joille lähetin tiedoksi itse kirjeenikin.

Tarvitseeko jokin tietokonemuseo Osborne 1:tä?

Erkki Hartikainen 12.12.2016

Kymmenvuotias tyttärenpoika sai vanhan Osborne 1 tietokoneeni toimimaan. Olin varmuuden vuoksi tilannut Internetin kautta toimivat lerput (floppy), ja tyttärenpoika keksi, että jonkinlaiset luukut on pantava kiinni ennen kuin lerput toimivat.

Myös isomman kokoinen Philipsin näyttö saatiin toimimaan. Ainakin taulukkolaskentaohjelma Supercalc toimii hyvin.

Ilmaiseksi en konetta anna, hinta on vähintään i7 suorittimen sisältävän pöytäkoneyksikön hinta.

Suomalaiset ovat aika pahoja änkyröitä

Erkki Hartikainen 11.12.2016

Euroopan uskontokartalla suomalaiset kuuluvat pahempaan luokkaan kuin muut pohjoismaat. Suomessa on aika suppea luonnon lajivalikoima, mutta keskustapuoluelais-perussuomalainen hallitus pystynee tuhoamaan kaiken, mitä vielä on tuhottavissa. Luonnon hävittäjillä ei ole perustuslain suojaa.

Hävittäjät voidaan vaikka pakkosiirtää muualle, jos he tuhoavat maata. Valitettavasti poliitikot esimerkiksi kalastelevat kalastajien ääniä.

Malta teki historiaa: Homojen ”käännytysterapiasta” tuli laitonta ensimmäisenä maana Euroopassa

Samalla alennettiin ikäraja sukupuolen vaihtamiselle 16 vuoteen

Lisätty 9.12.2016

MALTASTA on tullut ensimmäinen eurooppalainen valtio, jossa kielletään seksuaalisesta suuntautumisesta kuten homoudesta ”parantava” terapia tai vastaavat yritykset käännyttää henkilö heteroseksuaaliseksi. Maan parlamentti äänesti asiasta yksimielisesti, kertoi sanomalehti Malta Today.

Homoseksuaalisuus poistui rikoslaista vuonna 1971. Vuonna 1981 virallisesta tautiluokituksesta poistettiin kohta, jossa homoseksuaalisuus luokitellaan sairaudeksi.

Katolinen kirkko huolissaan: manaajista on kova pula

Lisätty 5.12.2016

Maailmassa on noin 400 pahojen henkien karkottamiseen erikoistunutta pappia, mutta kysyntä on kasvussa.

PAHOJEN henkien manaajista eli eksorsisteista on kova pula, Italian katoliset piispat valittelevat.

Maailmassa on nelisensataa manaajaksi koulutettua pappia ja noin 120 avustavaa manaajaa eli manaamiseen koulutettua maallikkoa, kertoi Itävallan katolinen tiedotustoimisto Kathpress lauantaina.

Manaajista noin puolet toimii Italiassa, kertoi Kathpress, joka nojasi uutisensa Italian piispainkokouksen lausuntoon. Toiseksi eniten manaajia on Puolassa.

PAHOJEN henkien manaaminen on osa katolisen kirkon perinnettä, HS kertoi vuonna 2014, kun eksorsistien kansainvälinen järjestö AIE sai virallisen aseman kirkon organisaatiossa.

Katolinen kirkko uskoo konkreettiseen ja aktiiviseen paholaiseen. Se katsoo pahojen henkien eli demonien yrittävän johdattaa kristittyjä ihmisiä kiusaukseen.

Kathpress kertoi uutisessaan esimerkkejä siitä, miten tunnistaa paholaisen vaikutuksen: ihminen osaa yhtäkkiä vieraita kieliä, tietää kätkettyjä asioita, saa selittämättömiä ruumiinvoimia tai tuntee inhoa pyhiä asioita kohtaan.

Katolinen kirkko on maailman suurin uskontokunta. Tällaisen keskiaikaisen manaamistouhun piträisi huoletttaa kaikkia uskonnottomia.

Pohjoisen pallonpuoliskon talvipäivänseisaus

Lisätty 4.12.2016

Pohjoisen pallonpuoliskon talvipäivänseisaus on vuosittain 21. tai 22. joulukuuta.

Tänä vuonna 2016 talvipäivänseisaus on keskiviikkona 21. joulukuuta klo 12.44 Suomen aikaa.

Eteläisellä pallonpuoliskolla on samaan aikaan kesäpäivänseisaus.

Samalla juhlan koettiin olevan hetkellinen paluu Saturnuksen valtakauden kulta-aikaan.

Saturnalia vastasi perinteiltään pitkälti kreikkalaista Kronia-juhlaa, jota vietettiin Saturnuksen kreikkalaisen vastineen Kronoksen kunniaksi.

Roomalainen juhla alkoikin kreikkalaisen riitin mukaisella eli paljain päin suoritetulla uhrilla.

Juhlintaa johtamaan valittiin princeps saturnalicius, eräänlainen karnevaalikuningas.

Ympärileikkaus on rikos

Erkki Hartikainen 2.12.2016

Ateisti on henkilö, jonka mielestä ateismi on tosi.

Agnostikon eli jumalaongelmaisen määritelmä

Agnostikko eli jumalaongelmainen on henkilö, joka ei mielestään tiedä, onko ateismi tosi vai onko teismi tosi.

Uskonnon määritelmä

Uskonto on järjestäytynyttä teismiä.

Pope Francis says atheists can do good and go to heaven too!

Added December 31. 2016

Pope Francis has good news for atheists. Jesus died and was raised for them as well. His redemptive embrace was for all, not just a chosen few.The choice to accept its reach is our own. The Holy Father was not teaching anything new. In fact, this hope that all who do not yet know God are not only capable of doing good - but will progress toward that knowledge of God by doing good - is ancient. The Church wants all men and women to be saved.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The Holy Father is full of surprises, born of true and faithful humility. On Wednesday he declared that all people, not just Catholics, are redeemed through Jesus, even atheists.

However, he did emphasize there was a catch. Those people must still do good. In fact, it is in doing good that they are led to the One who is the Source of all that is good. In essence he simply restated the hope of the Church that all come to know God, through His Son Jesus Christ.

Francis based his homily on the message of Christ to his disciples taken from the Gospel of Mark. Francis delivered his message by sharing a story of a Catholic who asked a priest if atheists were saved by Christ.

"They complain," Francis said, "If he is not one of us, he cannot do good. If he is not of our party, he cannot do good." He explained that Jesus corrected them, "Do not hinder him, he says, let him do good."

The disciples, Pope Francis explained, "were a little intolerant," closed off by the idea of possessing the truth, convinced that "those who do not have the truth, cannot do good." "This was wrong... Jesus broadens the horizon." Pope Francis said, "The root of this possibility of doing good - that we all have - is in creation."

"Even them, everyone, we all have the duty to do good, Pope Francis said on Vatican Radio.

"Just do good" was his challenge, "and we'll find a meeting point."

Francis explained himself, "The Lord created us in His image and likeness, and we are the image of the Lord, and He does good and all of us have this commandment at heart, do good and do not do evil. All of us. 'But, Father, this is not Catholic! He cannot do good.' Yes, he can... "The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, with the Blood of Christ, all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone! 'Father, the atheists?' Even the atheists. Everyone!" We must meet one another doing good. 'But I don't believe, Father, I am an atheist!' But do good: we will meet one another there."

Father James Martin, a Jesuit priest, told the Huffington Post, "Pope Francis is saying, more clearly than ever before, that Christ offered himself as a sacrifice for everyone. That's always been a Christian belief. You can find St. Paul saying in the First Letter to Timothy that Jesus gave himself as a 'ransom for all.' But rarely do you hear it said by Catholics so forcefully, and with such evident joy. And in this era of religious controversies, it's a timely reminder that God cannot be confined to our narrow categories."

Pope Francis is trying to deepen our understanding of the fullness of Christ's sacrifice and its reach, which extends to all men and women. We often fall into familiar ways of thinking that are closed. We divide ourselves into groups, forgetting that we are all children of God, identical, regardless of any divisions we establish for ourselves. We are also all called to the One who created us and, through His Son,is recreating us anew. He calls us to accept His salavation.

The Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World (Gaudium et Spes) contains an important explanation of the phenomena referred to as 'Atheism' (See, GS #17-22). It is a very large term and we have to first examine what is meant when it is embraced by an individual to best understand the effect of the claim.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that "Since it rejects or denies the existence of God, atheism is a sin against the virtue of religion but the imputability of the offense can be significantly diminished in virtue of the intentions and the circumstances" (CCC#2125).

The Holy Father was not teaching anything new. In fact, this hope that all who do not yet know God are not only capable of doing good - but will progress toward that knowledge of God by doing good -  is ancient. On Good Friday we all pray:

Let us pray also for those who do not believe in Christ, that, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, they, too, may enter on the way of salvation. Almighty ever-living God,grant to those who do not confess Christ that, by walking before you with a sincere heart, they may find the truth and that we ourselves, being constant in mutual love and striving to understand more fully the mystery of your life, may be made more perfect witnesses to your love in the world. Through Christ our Lord.

We are judged by a just God who will welcome us based on what we have done with what we knew. Those who do not know God will be judged on the good they have done and the values lived by, to paraphrase a quote oft attributed to the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius.

However, the most loving thing we can do for all men and women is recognize that they too hunger for the God who created them and then help them to find Him as He is fully and completely revealed in his Son Jesus Christ and the Church. That includes recognizing the good that they do and joining with them in the work.

These latest comments are consistent with Pope Francis' efforts to reach out to people of other faiths and of no faith at all. By emphasizing our common bonds, our Holy Father breaks down artificial barriers so that we may see, and love, one another more clearly.

US Christian group prayed for George Michael’s death

Added December 30, 2016

Back in 2011, after it was reported that George Michael had been hospitalised in Vienna after suffering pneumonia, someone called ‘Keith’ from Christians For a Moral America asked his Twitter followers to pray for Michael’s death:

In his response to these tweets,  Michael made a point of differentiating between fundamental Christianity and the kind that doesn’t think gay people will go to hell:

I know for a fact that many devout Christians. . . are truly wonderful, kind-hearted men and women who take the best parts of that religion and live admirable, generous and loving lives … But in my opinion … there are others who use their twisted interpretations of ancient scriptures as a pathetic excuse to be totally fucked up cunt-sucking bastards.

I would rather have had him say “cock-sucking bastards” as so many of these anti-gay rants come from what I sincerely believe are self-loathing individuals desperate to disguise their own homosexual tendencies, such as the US pastor Steven Anderson and the British evangelist and annoying Internet troll Bob Hutton.

Anderson, above, is reported today as saying:

First of all, George Michael’s burning in Hell right now. He was a very wicked, God-hating sodomite reprobate, and he’s getting the punishment that he deserves right now.

It’s been pretty sad to see even Christians in some cases saying, ‘Oh, we lost another great celebrity’, you know? ‘Rest in peace’ and all this kind of garbage.

Clearly, George Michael hated the Lord Jesus Christ … but not only that, he provides a great example of what sodomites are actually like.

He was found out to be a sodomite, for those who weren’t smart enough to just look at him in the 80s and see right away that the guy was a total faggot.

Branding him a paedophile, he added:

Quit mourning the death of this filthy pervert. He’s rotting in Hell right now for being a God-hating homosexual reprobate.

The cowardly Hutton, who hides behind his pathetic Gospel Truth blog, goes to great lengths to keep his face hidden and is either too lazy or stupid ever to put links in his facile posts,  said something similar immediately after Michael had died.

It is said that he died of heart failure.  I don’t know if this was brought on by drug abuse, or if he simply had a heart condition through no fault of his own, but either way, he must now face the consequences of living in open rebellion against the teachings of God’s infallible word – the Bible.  Any readers who wish to know his views on God, the Bible and Christians can easily find out more by simply googling  ‘George Michael’s views on God, religion and the Bible’.  However, I should warn readers that quotes from this ‘person’ may include vile swear words – that is the kind of man he was.

Clearly Michael detested Christian evangelicals like Anderson and Hutton, but was he truly “a God-hater”, as these morons claim? I don’t believe so.

In a eerily prophetic piece addressed to American readers of The Advocate in 2005 when the loathsome George W Bush was President he wrote:

I’ve never had a problem with God … In the England of my childhood, God could be described only as a fading presence, really. Two hundred children would hum vaguely decipherable hymns around me in the main hall each morning, and every once in a while I’d have to stop picking my nose to pretend I was looking for a number in my hymn book, but school had already become a secular environment for all intents and purposes …

This, he astutely argued, had much to do with the influx of immigrants from non-Christian countries.

One of the by-products of a more secular society is, of course, a lack of brimstone and fire when it comes to homosexuality. The two go hand in hand. In fact, there really ought to be a campaign to make Henry VIII the patron saint of English queerdom …  Without his arrogance the English would still be Catholic, and we would probably have our own Mel Gibsons and  Dubyas to deal with.

In a sick twist, immigration, the very thing that watered down the Church of England and protected English gay men from the ferocity of religious persecution, has become the new enemy to watch out for. As fundamentalism sweeps across America in the form of Bush and his new fan club, gays and lesbians on this side of the pond find themselves in the dreadful position of sharing our soapbox with racists.

We’re not afraid of our soft old village vicar. But we are beginning to worry about Allah … Muslim clerics here are beginning to spout some very scary stuff indeed in public, the kind of rhetoric that bishops and archbishops have had to stifle for the past 40 years.

Devout Christians and hard-line Muslims have found common political ground, and it’s called Us. Is it really possible that immigration, the saving grace of English queerdom, will eventually lead the charge against us?

Saudi court jails man for supporting women activists

Added December 29, 2016

Earlier this year,  Saudi women began been tweeting hundreds of thousands of messages denouncing the practice of male guardianship.

Guardianship grants full legal control of almost all of a woman’s lifestyle decisions to her closest legal male guardian, whether it’s her father, her husband or, in some cases, her son. This legal status lasts the woman’s whole life.

Saudi women, bloggers and activists have been using the hashtags #TogetherToEndMaleGuardianship and #StopEnslavingSaudiWomen to call for reform and to speak about how the practice has affected their lives – from barring them from work or studying to generally depriving them of freedoms men enjoy without hindrance.

The campaign was also propelled by the American NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW), which used the hashtag #TogetherToEndMaleGuardianship to promote a recently published report denouncing the practice.

HRW’s report came with a series of animated videos telling the stories of women whose guardians had abused their already extensive authority.

The report also described the practice of male guardianship as:

The most significant impediment to realiaing women’s rights in the country, effectively rendering adult women legal minors who cannot make key decisions for themselves.

It’s now been reported that a Saudi man who supported the women has been jailed for one year.

The unnamed man was also fined 30,000 riyals ($8,000) by a court in the eastern city of Dammam, for “inciting to end guardianship of women” in statements he posted on Twitter and in public posters.

He was arrested while putting up posters in mosques in al Hasa district calling for an end to the globally unique system that subjects women in the ultra-conservative kingdom to male control. During questioning, police found out that the man was also behind a wide online campaign to end the guardianship.

The defendant admitted pinning up the posters in several mosques, saying he solely launched an “awareness campaign” after finding that:

Some female relatives were facing injustice at the hands of their families.

Under the guardianship system a male family member, normally the father, husband or brother, must grant permission for a woman’s study, travel and other activities. Activists say that even female prisoners have to be received by the guardian upon their release, meaning that some have to languish in jail or a shelter beyond their sentences if the man does not want to accept them.

The womens’ campaign angered religious officials. The country’s most prominent religious figure, Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Sheikh said that any call to abolish male guardianship constituted a “crime” against Sunni Islam.

The Christian Persecution Card is Used to Sell Cars in Oklahoma

Those of you in Oklahoma have some really strange car commercials… I’m not sure if they want to sell me a vehicle or save my soul.

AutogroupOKC

The man in that video, David Stanley, has his own shady history, making his claims in support of conservative Christianity all the more hypocritical. Then again, the same evangelical base he’s catering to overwhelmingly voted for Donald Trump, so it’s not like we should take their professed “values” very seriously.

In any case, I hope they eventually get to wherever the hell they’re walking to.

NSS says religion’s role in the UK needs ‘significant reform’

Added December 27, 2016

As churchgoing and belief in God continues to decline, the public role of religion in Britain needs ‘significant reform’ says a new report from the National Secular Society.

Rethinking Religion and Belief in Public Life: A Manifesto for Change, issued at the weekend, says the the Church of England’s position as the established church with the Queen as Supreme Governor is “no longer tenable” and needs a rethink.

Christianity Today reports that the National Secular Society document, which is being sent this week to all MPs, calls for Britain to “evolve” into a secular democracy with a clear separation between religion and state. Its main demand is that the Church of England should no longer enjoy the patronage of the state.

Rethinking Religion notes that the Church of England is established only in England, not Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. The Church of Scotland is the national church in Scotland but has few privileges comparable to those of the Church of England.

It points out that:

One of the greatest privileges of the Church of England is the 26 bishops from English dioceses with ex officio seats in the UK Parliament, which gives them significant power to introduce and amend UK-wide legislation. The UK parliament is the only one in the world where bishops have such seats.

Other significant privileges include the Church’s currently pre-eminent role in national ceremonies, especially the coronation, and the monarch being the Supreme Governor of the Church, over whose liturgy and regulation Parliament has nominal control.

The NSS says this privileged status fails to reflect society as it is today and leads to inequity and unfairness.

The secularists also call for a moratorium on all new faith schools.

The time has come to separate church and state in order to ensure equality and fairness for believers and non-believers alike.

It says the current multi-faith approach is “at odds with the increasing religious indifference” in Britain.

Terry Sanderson, president of the National Secular Society, said:

Terry Sanderson

Vast swathes of the population are simply not interested in religion, it doesn’t play a part in their lives, but the state refuses to recognise this.

Britain is now one of the most religiously diverse and, at the same time, non-religious nations in the world. Rather than burying its head in the sand, the state needs to respond to these fundamental cultural changes.

Our report sets out constructive and specific proposals to fundamentally reform the role of religion in public life to ensure that every citizen can be treated fairly and valued equally, irrespective of their religious outlook.

The report also warns that the rise of so called “sharia courts” risks undermining the legal system. Allowing groups to opt-out of the state legal system in favour of a religious alternative:

Strikes at the heart of citizenship and a cohesive society.

The report also urges politicians to refrain from describing Britain as a “Christian country”.

Any approach which seeks to label the values widely shared by UK citizens as exclusively “Christian” is doomed to be out of touch with the views and lifestyles of the population.

George Broadhead, of the Coventry & Warwickshire Humanists, pointed out that Prime Minister Theresa May is well-know for doing just that:

In her Christian message Theresa May said: ‘As we gather with our friends and families at this time of year we proudly celebrate the birth of Christ and the message of forgiveness, love and hope that He brings.

‘We also think of Christians in other parts of the world who face persecution this Christmas and re-affirm our determination to stand up for the freedom of people of all religions to practise their beliefs in peace and safety.’

This, said Broadhead:

Is an extraordinary presumption that all recipients of her message are, like herself, committed Christians with no recognition of those of other faiths and none (now about half the population according to the last British Social Attitudes survey).

She is of course quite right in drawing attention to the persecution of Christians in other parts of the world, but what about the barbaric treatment of non-believers, especially those in Islamic countries? it seems that in the minds of Christians like May atheists, Humanists and other non-believers don’t exist.

But Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain of Maidenhead Synagogue said:

It may be true that more people in Britain are now secular rather than religious, but the report dismisses too easily the fact that the country is still based on Christian culture and Christian values.

It also glosses over the fact that the Church of England has been very accommodating to other faiths and stepped back to make room for them in the national life. While this may undermine the NSS’s assertions about the disproportionate role of faith in Britain, some of the recommendations still deserve attention.

Publicly funded faith schools have become agents of segregation and should no longer be allowed to discriminate in pupil admissions or teacher employment. The role of Sharia Councils should be reviewed to ensure that individual freedoms are not denied. A Humanist should be allowed to contribute to the BBC’s Thought for the Day. Expansive demands such as Disestablishment are an ask-too-far, but some gentle nudges are needed to keep faith tolerant.

Religious beliefs should not be a barrier to patients’ needs

Added December 26, 2016

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) has suggested a change to its guidelines that would place patients’ needs above the religious convictions of pharmacists – and in doing so has angered religious groups representing healthcare professionals.

According to this report, Christian and Muslim groups say that the “significant” shift suggested by the GPhC, the independent regulator for pharmacy in Great Britain, may jeopardise pharmacists’ identity, autonomy and ability to comfortably exercise professional judgement.

The move, if approved, would trigger a change in the pharmacist–patient relationship and a shift in favour of the needs of the patient.

In future, pharmacists may no longer be able to rely on referring a patient to another provider in cases where they feel their beliefs or personal values prevent them from offering the care the patient requires.

Cases where this could arise are typically the provision of emergency hormonal contraception, routine contraception and fertility medicines.

David Clapham, treasurer of the group Christians in Pharmacy, says:

People of faith are usually people of compassion … even if they cannot agree in all conscience to supply certain medications. He says the proposal may make “the position of some excellent professionals untenable” and deter people of faith from entering the profession.

This would be to the detriment of the profession, patients and pharmacy as a whole.

Hina Shahid, chair of the Muslim Doctors Association, says the GPhC’s proposal is well-intentioned but raises some important concerns.

Maintaining a culture of patient-centred care is undoubtedly the cornerstone of providing a safe and effective service to patients. However, we are concerned that certain proposed changes are very restrictive, such as removing the right of referral.

It is important to recognise that adhering to a high standard of professionalism in the workplace involves respecting the rights of health practitioners and accommodating values and principles that are important to them, religious or otherwise.

The guidance purports that patient-centred care and the autonomy and values of health practitioners are mutually exclusive, which they are not. Health practitioners will always strive to ensure patients’ needs are met and thus guidance that implies otherwise is not helpful nor in patients’ or health professionals’ best interests.

GPhC chief executive Duncan Rudkin, however, denies that the regulator is forcing pharmacists to act against their religious beliefs or personal values in the workplace.

It would be wrong of us to say that in delivering services you must act against your conscience. It’s not for us to make a statement like that.

Rudkin says the standard guidance was designed to support individuals and employers to be “proactive” and to make sure that there are no potential conflicts of interest between an individual’s religion, beliefs or values and patient-centred care. The same responsibility also falls with the employer, he notes.

The GPhC’s consultation document concedes:

These proposals will change the expectations placed on pharmacy professionals when their religion, personal values or beliefs might – in certain circumstances – impact on their ability to provide services. They will shift the balance in favour of the needs and rights of the person in their care.

We also want to highlight that, under the new proposals, a referral to another service provider might not be the right option, or enough, to ensure that person-centred care is not compromised. This is a significant change from the present position and it is vital that we hear from the public and the profession about this.

The GPhC adds:

In short, pharmacy professionals should not put themselves in a position where refusal to provide services would result in a person not receiving the care or advice they need, or breach human rights or equality legislation.

The regulator was prompted to propose the changes following a consultation on its revised professional standards that took place in April 2016.

The previous consultation revealed that most people who commented on the section around beliefs and values thought that professionals should not be able to refuse services because of their religion, personal values or beliefs, as this behaviour goes against the principle of providing person-centred care. This view was also backed by patients and customers who responded to the consultation, according to the GPhC.

Joy Wingfield, founder of the Pharmacy Law and Ethics Association and author of the book Pharmacy Ethics and Decision Making, says:

This consultation is an important shift in the balance of conscience between pharmacists or technicians and [the] service user. In short, the onus is now on the health professional to ensure that no service user is denied, hindered or criticised if their needs conflict with the conscience of individuals providing pharmacy services.

She said the shift is in line with guidance from other health regulators, such as the General Medical Council, and with recent case law.

Pharmacy professionals who anticipate that a request for a service may not be in line with their own religion, personal values or beliefs must be open to compromise; employers, colleagues and service users must be informed and pharmacy professionals may need to decline to take jobs or roles where such a conflict may arise.

She adds:

The guidance acknowledges the importance of complying with equalities, employment and NHS contractual law in such situations but stops short of giving legal advice on such issues.

Any proposed changes to the professional standards are scheduled for introduction in May 2017.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir Is Making a Big Mistake By Performing at Donald Trump’s Inauguration

AddedDecember 25, 2016
by

While big-name singers are evidently saying no to performing at Donald Trump‘s inauguration, one of the only well-known acts to say yes has been the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. They’re on a slate filled with Kid Rock, Ted Nugent, and an apparently divided group of Rockettes.

MTChoir

The Church made clear that this isn’t a political statement. They were invited and said yes; reading anything more into it would be wrong.

“Response to the announcement has been mixed, with people expressing both opposition and support,” church spokesman Eric Hawkins said in a statement. “The choir’s participation continues its long tradition of performing for U.S. presidents of both parties at inaugurations and in other settings, and is not an implied support of party affiliations or politics. It is a demonstration of our support for freedom, civility and the peaceful transition of power.”

But consider Trump’s statements over the past year, so awful to the point where Mormon Evan McMullin ran an independent campaign so that Republicans in Utah could vote for someone — anyone — else. Consider how Trump is surrounding himself with anti-gay conservatives at a time when the Mormon Church’s relationship with LGBT members is as perilous as ever. Consider Trump’s treatment of Mitt Romney, and what Romney said about Trump earlier in the year.

As someone who’s critical of the Mormon Church, it’s hardly surprising to see the choir accept this invitation, but imagine the reaction if they rejected it, saying they want nothing to do with the bigotry coming out of the future White House. What an act of courage that would be, and what a message it would send to members of the Church who are appalled by Trump’s behavior.

Robbie X. Pierce, writing at The Advocate, says it’s not too late for that to happen:

The truth of the matter is that performing for a president’s inauguration does imply support. Why else would no other musicians play the event? They don’t want their fans nor Donald Trump’s fans thinking that they support him. Why doesn’t the church seem to care about this? They do know they can say no, right?

The fact is that the Church knows the message this will send and they don’t care. They don’t care how gay Mormons feel. They don’t care about the racist, sexist overtones sent by the candidate and his team, because they’re guilty of the same problems.

There’s an online petition by “members and friends” of the Church asking them to decline the invitation. It currently has more than 13,000 signatures (and counting):

The Church’s participation will harm this spectacularly talented and beloved choir’s image, misrepresent the diversity of Mormons worldwide, and sends the wrong message to LDS children as they will perceive the Church’s participation as endorsement of a president whose words and actions do not align with our values.

The petition also says that performing at other government events, like a Fourth of July parade, wouldn’t be an issue since that wouldn’t be seen as an endorsement of Trump.

But for now, just remember that the Mormon Church is celebrating the election of a man who defies so many of the positive stereotypes people have of the faith. Not since the Church’s support of Proposition 8 have they handed their critics such a potent weapon to use against them. This decision is just another reason sensible people should avoid joining and supporting the LDS Church.

Abortions Aren't As Damaging To Your Mental Health As You Think

The Huffington Post Canada  |  By    Joy D'Souza
Added December 25, 2016

Contrary to popular belief, the experience of having an abortion has very little effect on women's mental health.

A new study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, which looked at the mental health of 1,000 women who sought an abortion in the United States over the course of five years, found that women who underwent the procedure did not experience more distress than those who were denied an abortion.

And the distress they experienced was short lived regardless of whether the women gave birth or decided to terminate elsewhere.

"Women who were denied an abortion, in particular those who later miscarried or had an abortion elsewhere, had the most elevated levels of anxiety and lowest self-esteem and life satisfaction 1 week after being denied an abortion, which quickly improved and approached levels similar to those in the other groups by 6 to 12 months,"

the researchers explained.

The researchers suggested the initial distress could be a result of being denied an abortion, but they may also be a result of social and emotional challenges often faced upon discovery of an unwanted pregnancy.

The study also found while women’s self-esteem levels were lowest and depression symptoms highest immediately prior to an abortion, these levels improved immediately following the abortion.

In the U.S. many states require women to undergo counselling, warning of mental health issues as a result of abortions.

In Canada, sexual health clinics offer counselling to help women make their decision as well as post-abortion counselling for those struggling after the procedure.

Pope Francis launches commission of inquiry into Order of Malta

Added December 24, 2016

Pope Francis has ordered a formal investigation into the dismissal of the deputy head of the ancient order of the Knights of Malta after he was sacked for allegedly promoting the use of condoms in the developing world.

In a highly unusual move, the Pope has appointed five people to inquire into the ousting of Albrecht Freiherr von Boeselager from the Catholic Church’s oldest military order, formally titled the Sovereign Order of Malta, headquartered in Rome.

The investigatory committee has been asked to gather information on the incident and report to the Holy See “in a short time”, but provided no further details.

Anti-gay Christian schools cry ‘foul’ over Ofsted findings

Added December 23

A number of private Christian schools have threatened legal action after being told to stop being so damned homophobic by education watchdog Ofsted.

According to this report, dozens of schools in the UK follow the widely discredited Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) curriculum, a Christian fundamentalist course of learning that sprouted in Texas then infected other countries. ACE currently lists 27 UK schools on its website.

ACE rejects virtually all modern educational theory. It is not aiming to teach children how to think, but rather, “how to see life from God’s point of view”. Asking questions is seen as a rejection of the divine authority invested in the school’s supervisors. As a result, the curriculum is systematically purged of methods of inquiry. Inevitably, higher order thinking skills are neglected; this is intentional.

Concerns have been repeatedly flagged about the use of ACE in British schools in the past, with an investigation in 2014 raising concerns about ACE textbooks teaching that homosexuality is a choice, evolution is a lie, abortion is wrong, and AIDS can be avoided by following the Bible.

Ten ACE schools affiliated with the Christian Education Europe network threatened legal action after Ofsted inspection results that saw them criticised for failing to meet rules on teaching ‘British values’ that were introduced by former Education Secretary Nicky Morgan, and for failing to “promote respect” for LGBT people.

After visits by Ofsted in October, nine of the ten schools were declared “inadequate” or “requires improvement”, with many of the reports citing evidence that pupils were not taught about other religions, while inspectors to some schools also warned of a failure to “actively promote respect for people within the protected characteristics groups” due to rampant homophobia.

The report for inadequate-rated Luton Pentecostal Church Christian Academy notes:
The school’s policy statement on personal, social and health education states:

‘Whilst we understand that the government has redefined marriage we will actively promote exclusive heterosexual marriage and celibate singles, as God’s gift and design; and as such the best way toward human happiness and fulfilment, but will discourage intolerance.’

This statement describes an approach that is too far removed from the active promotion of respect for gay and lesbian men and women.

The report for the inadequate-rated Windsor King’s House School also noted:

The proprietor must provide personal, social, health and economic education which encourages respect for other people, paying particular regard to the protected characteristics set out in the 2010 Act.

Enter the demented Andrea Williams of the Christian Legal Centre, which is apparently spearheading the threat of action. She said:

These schools produce children who are kind, tolerant, interesting and go on to do good jobs. Most of all, they are happy. That is what Christian education does for them…. Those not following the political ideology of Ofsted are now liable to be punished.

Ofsted is critical of the Christian belief system within the schools and yet it is this very belief system that is the foundation of schools across this country.

Jay Harman of the British Humanist Association said:

We have been raising concerns about these schools in the media and with government for years, and we’re glad that the authorities are finally beginning to realise how badly the children within them are being failed.

The line Ofsted has taken here is absolutely right, and it is frankly astonishing that any school could accuse inspectors of unfair treatment while providing children with a narrow, doctrinaire, and homophobic curriculum.

It is essential that inspectors do not become discouraged by these disingenuous claims and we will continue to support both Ofsted and the Department for Education as they rightly toughen their stance against this kind of teaching.

Ofsted said the schools:

Have a responsibility to prepare pupils for life in multi-faith Britain and are expected to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, which teaches respect and tolerance towards those from cultures and faiths that may not be represented within the school.

Earlier this year, an undercover reporter for VICE found that an ACE school in the UK offered to help perform an exorcism-style ritual for a gay pupil.

Pupils in ACE schools do not study towards GCSEs or A-Levels, and instead work to attain a International Christian Certificate of Education.
In short, they are programmed to enter the real world as good-for-nothing God-addled imbeciles.

Goat sacrificed to ensure the safety of a Pakistan plane

Added December 22, 2016

PIA, Pakistan’s national airline, has been roundly mocked after officials sacrificed a black goat to bring luck to a plane departing from Islamabad airport on Sunday.

The animal was beheaded on the runway by airline officials before the take-off of a turboprop ATR-42 aircraft – the same model as the PIA plane that crashed into a mountain on December 7, killing all 48 people on board.

After the crash, Muhammad Azam Saigol, PIA’s chairman, tendered his resignation citing personal reasons. The government’s Aviation Secretary, Irfan Elahi, was then appointed acting chairman of the airline.

The sacrifice, according to this report, was intended as “a gesture of gratitude”, according to a PIA spokesman. An image of the killing posted on social media soon went viral.

GeoTV reported that the sacrifice of the animal, after a complete examination of the ATR plane had taken place, was ordered by PIA’s Director of Engineering.

Imran Khan, the opposition leader and former cricketer, tweeted:

Shocking the depths we have fallen to. PIA was amongst the top airlines of the world & now it is slaughtering goats for safety of its planes.

Others commented that they would rather see technical improvements to the aircraft than animal sacrifices. Dawn, the most widely read English-language newspaper in Pakistan, had the front-page headline  that said:

PIA: On a wing and a prayer.

Sunday’s flight landed safely in Multan, in the east of the country.

Kids Are Leaving Catholicism Because They See Atheism As “Smart” and Faith as a “Fairy Tale”

Added December 21, 2016

by Hemant Mehta

Anyone who’s been following the demographic trends regarding religion won’t be surprised to hear this, but it’s still welcome news:

A new report from the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) at Georgetown University says that children are leaving the Catholic faith — for good reason — and some of them are doing it before reaching the age of 10.'

“Those that are leaving for no religion — and a pretty big component of them saying they are atheist or agnostic — it turns out that when you probe a bit more deeply and you allow them to talk in their own words, that they are bringing up things that are related to science and a need for evidence and a need for proof,”

said Doctor Mark Gray, a senior research associate at the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University.

In exploring why young Catholics were choosing to leave the faith, he noted “an emerging profile” of youth who say they find the faith “incompatible with what they are learning in high school or at the university level.” In a perceived battle between the Catholic Church and science, the Church is losing.

The most common reason given for leaving the Catholic faith, by one in five respondents, was they stopped believing in God or religion.

This was evidence of a “desire among some of them for proof, for evidence of what they’re learning about their religion and about God,” Gray said.

It’s a trend in the popular culture to see atheism as “smart” and the faith as “a fairy tale,” he said.
To be sure, the Catholic Church is generally fine with science these days, fully accepting and teaching the Big Bang and evolution, unlike many evangelical Christians. But this is the also the same Church that says a consecrated communion wafer is literally the body of Jesus. So it only goes so far.

When it comes down to it, the Catholic Church still fights against marriage equality, birth control, and abortion rights.

They are known for protecting pedophile priests. They refuse to let women in the upper echelons of their leadership.

Catholics sued to overturn the Affordable Care Act because they said signing a piece of paper (to get out of providing birth control to employees) was a violation of their religious beliefs. They make life worse for people who are already in tough situations.

If you’re a middle school student these days, you’re well aware of some of these issues. Your favorite YouTubers talk about it all the time, the media you take in is diverse and inclusive, your friends are talking about faith and sexuality. And the Catholic Church is probably not seen as a moral leader in any of these places.

Religious, dogmatic thinking is what we have to overcome, not celebrate.

It doesn’t mean those kids are embracing atheism, per se — but they’re certainly not embracing religion in the same way they used to. And if the Church doesn’t change, neither are they.

Of those who had left the faith, “only 13 percent said they were ever likely to return to the Catholic Church,” Gray wrote. And “absent any big changes in their life,” he said to CNA, they “are probably not coming back.”

Gray suggested that one way to counter these trends was to make sure children were taught from an early age that science and Catholicism aren’t in conflict.

But that’s ridiculous. They are. Sure, Catholics accept basic facts about science, but they also believe in a world where all those scientific rules can be upended by God on a whim. (Just ask the guy who died and came back to life three days later. Or His virgin mother.)

That solution also ignores the very real reasons young people leave the Church, including the most common answer they gave for being atheists: They wanted proof of God’s existence and never saw it.

This trend shows no signs of dissipating and the Church will continue shedding young members. We’re all going to be better off because of it.

Cop shoots Russian diplomat dead, shouts ‘God is great’

Added December 20, 2016

Russia’s ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov was shot dead earlier today by Mevlut Mert Altintas, above, a 22-year-old riot squad police officer.

The Telegraph reports that the assassin shouted Allahu Akbar – God is great – as he pulled the trigger, and said:

We die in Aleppo, you die here. We have made an oath to Mohammed to die in martyrdom … a revenge for Syria and Aleppo.

The gunman – an off-duty policeman – opened fire at an art gallery in Ankara as Andrei Karlov was making a speech.

Karlov pictured minutes before his assassination
The murder followed days of protests in Turkey over Russia’s role in Syria as a backer of President Bashar al-Assad.

The Turkish foreign ministry insisted it would not allow the murder to “cast a shadow” over Turkey’s improving relations with Russia.
Altintas was shot dead by police in a shoot-out that lasted 15 minutes. Three other people were wounded in the attack.

President Putin spoke on the phone to Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after the shooting and Moscow said it was:

A tragic day in the history of our country and Russian diplomacy.

Later, in what appeared to be another terrorist attack, at least nine people were killed and 50 others injured when a truck ploughed into a Christmas market in Berlin.

MP slams BBC for vilifying Olympic athlete Louis Smith

Added December 19, 2016

Conservative MP Charles Walker has accused the BBC of placing itself ‘firmly at the head of the mob’ who attacked Louis Smith for lampooning Islam.

Walker also said the Government was “nowhere to be seen” when it should have been defending free expression.

He added that the Government’s silence over the hounding and death threats against Louis Smith:
Heralds, de facto, the reintroduction of an unwritten blasphemy law, enforced by threat and thuggery.

He said the episode:

Shamed our nation and its laws. In our liberal and open society, freedom of worship marches hand in hand with the freedom to lampoon religion. Quite simply, that is the deal.

Walker said after The Sun released a video of Smith making fun Islamic prayers:

Sensationalist reporting of his actions in some sections of the media resulted in the gymnast’s receiving multiple death threats.

And he pointed out:

The BBC has a rich heritage of aiming both excoriating and gentle humour in the direction of Christianity over the past 40 years. We have had Dave Allen, Monty Python and the Vicar of Dibley, and I particularly remember Not the Nine O’Clock News, in the early 1980s, taking the Church of England to task for its views on homosexuality.

So, given its proud tradition of tackling religious sensibilities, one could be forgiven for thinking that the BBC would inject some common sense and balance into the reporting of Louis Smith’s actions. Not a bit of it: instead of trying to insert itself between Louis Smith and the mob, the corporation placed itself firmly at the head of the mob.

He drew attention to a Radio 5 Live interview where the presenter said Smith had been “very, very offensive” and “shameful”.

Walker said that, by treating mockery of religion as “shameful” the presenter:

Placed a question mark over the motives and legacy of some of the UK’s greatest deceased and living comedians. Louis Smith is never going to be the world’s greatest comedian, but we – and the BBC – should be blind to that fact, because the law applies as much to gymnasts as it does to joke-tellers.

He wrote to the BBC challenging why no condemnation of the death threats was made during the interview, despite the presenter finding time to condemn Smith. He said that the “inquisitorial tone of the interview” heightened the “already significant threat to his well-being and safety.”

In response the BBC said that the interview helped Smith, because it meant he could “appease” “people who might be angry with him.”

Walker insisted:

The only person who is deserving of an apology is Louis Smith himself. He is owed an apology from the Muslim Council of Britain for its ridiculous overplaying of Muslim sensitivities towards their faith.

The MBC said that Smith’s apology:

Fell well short of addressing the hurt caused against Muslims.

This, said Walker, was:

Uncharitable nonsense from an organisation that strives to be taken seriously.

Walker also said that British Gymnastics should apologise to Smith for its “cowardly decision” to suspend him. A petition calling for British Gymnastics to lift Smith’s ban has only managed to attract 5,117 signatures,

The National Secular Society welcomed Walker’s comments, particularly his criticism of the Government to be proactive in defending freedom of expression.

Campaigns director Stephen Evans said:
The sensationalising of this private video by the media, and particularly The Sun, only contributed to a climate of censorship brought on by the unreasonable and reactionary views of some religious extremists.

Too few spoke out for Louis Smith’s right to freedom of expression, and the Prime Minister gave a troubling and weak answer when asked about the case at Prime Minister’s Questions last month.

When Walker asked the Prime Minister about Louis Smith in November, Theresa May said that there “is a balance we need to find” and that Smith, despite being threatened with death, had:
A responsibility to recognise the importance of tolerance of others.

In early December Walker asked the Home Secretary why she had failed to give voice to the importance of defending free expression “during the manhunt and vilification of the gymnast Louis Smith.”

Law that protects non-believers signed by Barack Obama

Added December 18, 2016

President Obama has been warmly commended by the American Humanist Association for signing the Frank R Wolf International Religious Freedom Act into law.

In a statement, Roy Speckhardt, above, Executive Director of the AHA, said:

The American Humanist Association is proud to see this historic legislation signed into law and looks forward to working with the US Department of State to ensure religious liberty for non-theists and religious minorities abroad.

That non-theists are now recognized as a protected class is a significant step toward full acceptance and inclusion for non-religious individuals, who are still far too often stigmatized and persecuted around the world.

The law – which updates the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 – supports freedom of thought and religion and protects both theistic and non-theistic beliefs. It is the first US law that includes the term “non-theist”.

The AHA lobbied both Democrats and Republicans for inclusive language in the bill that would recognise the rights of humanists, atheists and other non-religious individuals, in addition to defending theistic religious minorities. The Act states that:

The freedom of thought, conscience, and religion is understood to protect theistic and non-theistic beliefs as well as the right not to profess or practice any religion.

The Act also condemns “specific targeting of non-theists, humanists, and atheists because of their beliefs” and attempts to forcibly compel “non-believers or non-theists to recant their beliefs or to convert.”

The persecution of openly humanist and atheist writers has become an area of increasing concern especially after the string of murders of secular bloggers and publishers by religious extremists in Bangladesh.

The American Humanist Association, along with other international advocates for religious freedom, have also been critical of the flogging of secular writers in Saudi Arabia, as well as a Saudi law that equates atheism with terrorism.

Ahead of Obama signing the HR 1150 bill into law, Speckhardt said:

Legislators are finally recognizing the human dignity of humanists and granting the non-theistic community the same protections and respect that have been given to religious communities. With the increasing global persecution of humanists and atheists at the hands of religious authoritarians, we’re proud that Congress and the US Department of State are standing for the liberty of all people, both religious and non-religious.

Matthew Bulger, Legislative Director of the AHA added:

A historic piece of legislation that for the first time in our nation’s history recognizes non-theists, the International Religious Freedom Act is the result of extensive advocacy efforts from the humanist community and the support of our religious allies. Religious freedom for all people, theists and non-theists, is an American value we must protect.

The International Religious Freedom Act will strengthen the standing of the International Religious Freedom Office and the Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, and promote other actions meant to foster religious freedom abroad.

While welcoming the new law, Friendly Atheist Hermant Mehta pointed out a “downside”:

It also defends the rights of those who wanted to partake in ritualistic animal slaughter and male circumcision.

Christians crow over death of atheist activist Rob Sherman

Christians crow over death of atheist activist Rob Sherman

Added December 17, 2016

In Illinois at the weekend, a light plane crashed. It took several days for the authorities to confirm that the pilot who died was a prominent atheist activist, Rob Sherman, above.

Christians were quick celebrate his death.

Here’s two of many examples:

I believe he got what he deserved … he was nothing but a trouble maker like all these atheists are … they make it hard on everyone who wants to celebrate Christianity.

Great news!! … this clown was one of the biggest losers ever … everything he did was done to get attention … he was a failure in every thing he did and this fiery death proves it ….wonderful!!

In truth, Sherman, 63, was anything but a loser. He was a warm-hearted, friendly man who made it his mission to keep church and state separate. He campaigned on green issues as well as supporting LGBT rights, and largely did so successfully.

According to this report, in 1986, Sherman started his first legal battle against the mixing of government and religion, as he challenged the mayor and city of Zion, located near the Wisconsin border, on the inclusion of religious symbols on municipal logos, material and property.

His efforts were successful and landed his name on the front page of the Chicago Tribune, on the city’s 10 o’clock newscasts and on national television talk shows, including those of Oprah Winfrey, Phil Donahue and Larry King.

He said he took up the mantle of promoting his cause across the state and nation simply because no one else was doing so.

I’m the only one doing it. Most people suffer from poultry syndrome, so they don’t take on these cases. They’re chicken.

Sherman became an atheist aged just nine, when a teacher failed to answer a classmate’s question on what evidence proves God’s existence.

The more I thought about it, I realised it was man who created God in his image, and not the other way around.

Then, in 1981, his atheism went to the next level when he heard a radio speech by American Atheists founder Madalyn Murray O’Hair, who successfully won a battle against mandatory school prayer and Bible readings in the US Supreme Court in 1959.

Sherman was motivated to join the organisation and eventually became its Illinois director and national spokesman.

He left American Atheists after ten  years to found his own organisation, Rob Sherman Advocacy, a venture supported by his other entrepreneurial efforts, including a travel agency, a delivery service, concert booking and airplane sales. He also used to host a morning drive radio show in Chicago.

But he failed to do well in the political arena. In 2006,  he unsuccessfully campaigned for an Illinois House of Representative seat as a Democrat. Two years later, he met Green Party gubernatorial candidate and Carbondale attorney Rich Whitney, and the two developed a mutual respect. Sherman joined the party and ran – again unsuccessfully – for the same House seat.

He said of a possible third run.

I doubt I’ll do it again. The community has made it clear they don’t want me as their messenger because I’m an atheist and the majority are Christian, and that’s their choice. I did what I could.

Later, however, he changed his mind and ran for District Congress during the 2016 General Election and proved the most  popular Green candidate. Then, last month, he announced that he would take part in the 2018 Primary Election as a Green Party candidate for Congress in the 12th Congressional District of Illinois.

Whitney said:

Rob is a very gregarious person, very outgoing, very friendly. He just believes very deeply – not just as an atheist but as a civil libertarian – that it is not the government’s role to support religious organisations. While he’s like me in the sense that he’s not afraid to get in front of a camera and run his mouth, it really is about the principle for him. He really believes in the cause he’s promoting

Indian Citizens Have Been Arrested and Assaulted for Not Complying With New National Anthem Law

Added December 16, 2016

by Hemant Mehta

India’s Supreme Court ruled last month that all movie theaters had to play the National Anthem at the start of every screening, and all citizens were required to stand up for it. As if forced patriotism would make everyone love their country more…

They’re not messing around either. Now that the law’s in effect, people are getting arrested and assaulted for not complying:

Twelve people were arrested on Monday evening at a cinema in India, after they remained seated while the national anthem played.

The cinemagoers, who were attending an international film festival in the city of Trivandrum in Kerala, were later freed but they face charges of “failure to obey an order issued by a public servant, thereby causing obstruction or annoyance to others”.

And at a cinema in Chennai on Sunday, eight people who did not stand for the anthem were assaulted and abused, police said. The eight were later charged with showing disrespect to the anthem.

It’s a bizarre way to instill love of country, by making everyone participate in a mandatory ritual during an otherwise enjoyable and popular pastime. What message does it send to the rest of the world when Indian people have to be forced to say the anthem or else they won’t do it?

It also stifles legitimate resistance to the idea. Anyone trying to be the Indian Colin Kaepernick will be swiftly punished. (To make matters worse, the law requires all doors to stay shut during the anthem, in order to prevent anyone from walking out.

Only last week was an exemption offered for disabled people physically unable to stand up.)
Hindustan Times columnist Gopalkrishna Gandhi is right to say that forcing people to sing the anthem is the wrong way to get them to love the anthem:

The national anthem is not a traffic signal that has to be respected. It is not a tax that requires compliance. It is not a test that has to be submitted to. It is the poetic equivalent of collective pride, the lyrical expression of a nation’s resolve to advance from ancient primitivisms and medieval bigotries to a future in dignity and justice.

If songs are sung because one wants to sing them, heard because one wants to hear them and not under orders, anthems are sung or played when the occasion and the moment for it is right, when the sound of it saturates one’s sense of belonging to the greatness of India, and the greatness of India belonging to oneself.

You can’t show pride in your country when it’s no longer a choice.

Those of us who hold unpopular beliefs — and have fought a lot of battles for our right to peacefully dissent — should recognize why India’s law here makes no sense. Just like the phrase “I love you” means absolutely nothing if you’re saying it under duress, this law is designed to backfire.

The National Anthem will come to represent an authoritarian regime instead of the largest democracy in the world.

Somewhere, I’m sure, Donald Trump is trying to figure out how to implement this law in the U.S.

Oklahoma’s war on abortion reaches new levels of insanity

Added December 15, 2016

Earlier this year,  the Oklahoma House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to bar doctors from performing abortions in all cases except to save the woman’s life.

A doctor who violates the law would be committing a felony, punishable by up to three years in prison and the loss of his or her medical licence.

It has now emerged that Oklahoma’s war on abortion includes a provision that the state must create propaganda “for the purpose of achieving an abortion-free society” – and that anti-abortion signs must be posted by January inside the toilets of hospitals, nursing homes, restaurants and public schools.

Businesses and other organisations will have to pay an estimated $2.3 million to put up the signs because the Legislature didn’t approve any money for them.

Groups representing hospitals and restaurants are among those complaining that the new requirements are an expensive, unfunded mandate from the Legislature.

Said Jim Hooper, President of the Oklahoma Restaurant Association:

We don’t have any concern about the information they’re trying to get out to women about their babies and their pregnancy. This is just the wrong way to do it. It’s just another mandate on small businesses. It’s not just restaurants. It includes hospitals, nursing homes. It just doesn’t make sense.

The anti-abortion group Oklahomans for Life requested the bill. The sponsor, Republican Senator A  J Griffin, said she may revise the measure in the upcoming legislative session to more narrowly target it to exclude some facilities.

I do see how it is going to need to be tempered a tad. We need to make sure we have something that’s reasonable and still effective.”

Under the law, the signs would state:

There are many public and private agencies willing and able to help you carry your child to term and assist you and your child after your child is born, whether you choose to keep your child or to place him or her for adoption. The State of Oklahoma strongly urges you to contact them if you are pregnant.

The signs would also include a link to the Health Department’s website.

In written comments provided to the Health Department, the Tulsa Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy called the proposed regulations:

Completely unnecessary and unwanted.

The group said they would provide a significant financial burden on already stressed state agencies, including the departments of Health and Education.

Department of Health who has worked on the rules, said the signage requirements apply to public restrooms of any entity that is regulated by the agency, including hospitals, hotels and motels, nursing homes, residential care facilities and most public schools. He added:

There is definitely a cost involved in moving forward with this.

The Oklahoma Hospital Association projected it would cost at least $225,000 for signage at the state’s 140 licensed hospitals, with the fiscal impact on other licensed industries estimated at about $2.1 million.

Tony Lauinger, Executive Director of Oklahomans for Life, said the group’s intent was for the Health Department to produce the signage, but only if the Legislature appropriated funds to do so.

'Rebel' Saudi Arabia woman who posted photo without head scarf is arrested

Added December 14

Saudi police have arrested a young woman who tweeted a picture of herself outdoors without the body-length robes and head scarf that women in the kingdom are required to wear.

A woman identified as Malak al-Shehri posted a picture of herself on Twitter in a jacket and multi-colored dress last month after announcing that she would leave her house without her abaya, a long loose-fitting robe, and headscarf.

The tweet caused a backlash with many calling for Shehri – whose first name means angel, which was also her moniker online – to be executed with the hashtag “We demand the arrest of the rebel Angel Shehri.”

The picture posted on the downtown Riyadh street of al-Tahliya, led to someone filing a complaint with the religious police, and eventually to the woman’s arrest, according to the local Arabic-language Al-Sharq newspaper.

A police spokesman told the newspaper that Shehri, who is in her 20s, was taken to prison and he also accused her of “speaking openly about prohibited relations with (non-related) men”.

“Police officers have detained a girl who had removed her abaya on al-Tahliya street, implementing a challenge she announced on social media several days ago,” the newspaper quoted Colonel Fawaz al-Maiman as saying.

The country imposes a strict dress code on women in public, as well as banning them from driving and mixing with men they are not related to.

Police spokesman Maiman reportedly said in a statement that they had acted inline with their duty to monitor “violations of general morals”.

After a fierce backlash from ultra-conservative critics online, Shehri took down the picture and deleted her Twitter account. Other Twitter users came out in support, with one comparing her to Rosa Parks.

Thousands of Saudis signed a petition in September that demanded the government abolish the guardianship system, which prevents women from engaging in fundamental tasks without the permission of a male relative.

In late November, Saudi prince Alwaleed bin Talal broke with norms and called for lifting of the ban on women driving. “Stop the debate,” he wrote on Twitter. “It’s time for women to drive.”

Well, blow me! You don’t often see nativity scenes like this

Added December 13, 2016

Visitors to a nativity scene in Lucerne, Switzerland, got fits of the giggles when they saw a figure of Mary apparently performing oral sex on Joseph.

But not everyone appreciated the work of the pranksters who rearranged the figures to suggest that Jesus’ mum was giving Joseph a Christmas a blow job.

Franz Schumacher, who created the nativity scene at the market in the picturesque Swiss city, called the prank “disrespectful” and added that it was not funny that his work has been “desecrated”.

That hurts me very much. They do not know that it offends others. But their brains cannot think that far ahead as they have probably drowned them in alcohol.

But, while many did find it funny, the Metro reports that the majority did not enjoy the change, branding it a “shame”.

One passer-by said:

They are really stupid people who did this. I mean, even children have had a look at this.

The Catholic Church also condemned the “unacceptable”vandalism. The local spokesman for the church, Urban Schwegler said:

It is unacceptable to destroy the property of others. And it is also intolerable that someone violates the religious feelings of others.

But in Texas, one deranged Christian believes it’s perfectly OK to ruin Christians for kids and their parents.

The Friendly Atheist Hermant Mehta reports that David Grisham Jr, a self-described Christian “pastor” who recently ran the fringe group Repent Amarillo, strolled into a Texas mall, found a bunch of kids and parents waiting in line to take a picture with Santa, and yelled out that Santa wasn’t real … because Jesus was the true reason for the season.

David Grisham Jr

Representing a new loony tunes group, Last Frontier Evangelism, he yelled at people in the Amarillo shopping centre

… When you substitute the lie of Santa Claus in the heart of your child for the truth of Jesus Christ, you are bearing false witness against God. Don’t lie to your children and tell them there’s such a thing as Santa, when you know in reality that there are no flying reindeer, there is no workshop at the North Pole, there is no elves making toys, that you buy all the gifts and put ’em under the tree.

That’s all the truth. And there is no real Santa Claus. There is no Santa. It is not your place to lie to your children. Tell them the truth about Jesus Christ.

On Facebook, Grisham posted the video with the description that he was “ASSAULTED by parent at Amarillo Texas Mall” for talking about Jesus. There’s no evidence of that in the video other than a man coming close to him and asking him to stop yelling.

Said Mehta:

Grisham is essentially encouraging parents to substitute one myth for another … but that’s a decision the parents should be able to make for themselves. While plenty of atheists would take issue with religious indoctrination – in part, because it’s meant to last a lifetime – most atheists have no problem telling kids about Santa because there’s an expectation they’ll grow out of it.

There’s joy in (temporarily) letting them believe the story and spirit of the holidays … and there’s also joy in seeing children work out the logic behind why Santa Claus doesn’t exist.

Grisham took that away from them. What he did was no different than standing outside a movie theater and spoiling the story for everyone still waiting to buy tickets. It doesn’t make anyone sympathize with his passion; it makes them want nothing to do with him. Ever.

In 2010, Grisham posted a video of a firing squad executing Santa — because it distracted people from Jesus. Grisham is also well-known for targeting gay pride events.

Fred Karger has a plan to force the Mormon Church to pay tax

Added December 12, 2016

Fred Karger, a prominent gay-rights activist and former US presidential candidate, has unveiled plans to build ‘the biggest, loudest and most comprehensive’ legal case ever mounted for revoking the tax-exempt status of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A longtime critic of Mormons’ involvement in California’s anti-gay 2008 Proposition 8 campaign, Karger said he has amassed a network of lawyers, researchers, investigators and like-minded organisations to help take his fight to the IRS.

According to this report, Karger, 66, visited Salt Lake City to stage on-camera auditions with young Mormons and ex-Mormons aggrieved by the Utah-based Mormons’ lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender policies.

Some of these 18- to 24-year-olds, Karger said, will be featured in a series of TV commercials to be aired in Utah early next year, encouraging others to step forward with inside information on the church’s business holdings and political dealings – including its efforts against same-sex marriage.

He said:

Somebody has got to fight for these kids. It’s inexcusable, the damage and suffering the church has caused for so many of these families.

The Mormon faith, he said:

Needs to change with the times.

Karger, who in 2012 became the first openly gay candidate to seek the Republican presidential nomination, founded Californians Against Hate in 2008 partly to investigate under-reported financial involvement by Mormons in support of Prop 8, which briefly banned gay marriage in the Golden State.

The Mormons’ involvement with Prop 8 in California sparked widespread anger

Karger said his probing of the LDS Church had fallen largely dormant after his failed presidential quest – only to be revived in the aftermath of the November 2015 LDS policy declaring gay Mormon couples “apostates” and generally barring their children from baptism until they turn 18.

He said the policy’s emotional toll – including what he called a spike in teen suicides – has been traumatic.

The IRS case may take a year or more to build, Karger conceded. “We’re really going to dig,” he said, adding the filing would be accompanied by “hundreds of boxes of documents,” including internal church memos and videos that already have been leaked.

His California-based Rights Equal Rights also has launched a website, MormonTips.com, to encourage LDS whistleblowers. The site says:

The Mormon Church receives billions and billions of dollars every year from its members through a mandatory, minimum 10% tithing of their gross income. The billions of dollars given to the Mormon Church are tax deductible to Church members.

The Mormon Church’s business holdings, estimated to be nearly $1 trillion, are run as tax free enterprises owned outright by the Church. Thus the Mormon Church does not likely pay any federal, state or local taxes on its profits from all its holdings.

Federal law prohibits churches and other tax-exempt entities from participating or intervening on behalf of political candidates.
In past comments, Mormon officials have been adamant they have kept within legally appropriate lines. The LDS Church maintains a neutral stance in partisan matters, but reserves its right to speak out on issues with:

Significant community or moral consequences.

While motivated by what he sees as the harmful social impact of the LDS Church’s LGBT policies, Karger said, his IRS push focuses on political and business activities that he argues have compromised its assertions of remaining on the political sidelines.

He alleges LDS Church involvement in opposing same-sex marriage initiatives in as many as 26 states and the use of Mormon meetinghouses for political organising.

Karger said he is also working to substantiate assertions that LDS Public Affairs officials assisted Republican Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential bid behind the scenes. Romney, who lost to President Barack Obama, became the first Mormon to head a major party ticket in the US

Karger said he also is targeting taxation on the church’s vast commercial and land holdings, including retail operations such as Deseret Book and City Creek Center, the $2 billion shopping complex in the heart of Salt Lake City.

These activities cross the line and nobody has challenged them on it.

Karger has a tough battle ahead.

Sam Brunson, a tax-law scholar at Loyola University in Chicago, has noted that no tax-exempt entity has lost its exemption with the IRS for violating public policy since 1978 – “much less,” he said, “any church.”

War crimes tribunal seeks to try Islamic State detainees with crimes against humanity

Added December 11, 2016

sexslaves

WASHINGTON (AP) — War crimes investigators collecting evidence of the Islamic State group’s elaborate operation to kidnap thousands of women as sex slaves say they have a case to try Islamic State leaders with crimes against humanity but cannot get the global backing to bring current detainees before an international tribunal.

Two years after the Islamic State’s onslaught in northern Iraq, the investigators, as well as U.S. diplomats, say the Obama administration has done little to pursue prosecution of the crimes that Secretary of State John Kerry has called genocide.

Current and former State Department officials say that an attempt in late 2014 to have a legal finding of genocide was blocked by the Defense Department, setting back efforts to prosecute Islamic State members suspected of committing war crimes.

Discrimination and violence lie at the heart of Sharia courts

Added December 10, 2016

By Maryam Namazie

I gave oral evidence at the Home Affairs Select Committee evidence session on Sharia Councils on November 1 on why Sharia courts in Britain are an Islamist project to control women, are discriminatory and should be dismantled. (This was preceded by a written statement.)

When questioned by MP Naz Shah, above, though, one would have thought it was I and not Sharia courts that were under investigation.  She said:

But Ms Namazie, according to your blog, which I read earlier, this isn’t just about Sharia courts. If we were to look at implementing your view of the world, the majority of discrimination would be faced by the 33 million Christians of this country because you would have away with Christianity and any religious institutions … What you are saying is that you are denying everybody’s religious view on life.

Naz Shah also accused opponents of “Islamophobia”.

The accusations were a clear attempt to discredit my evidence solely based on my atheism and being an ex-Muslim. There was no similar attempt to discredit any of the other nine witnesses giving oral evidence in this manner – including those who actually ran the discriminatory Sharia courts.

The wilful conflation between criticism of religion and the religious-Right with discrimination against believers is nothing new. Nor is the attempt to vilify dissenters.

As Algerian sociologist Marieme Helie Lucas says:

Yes, we do have an already quite long experience of perversity, which magically turns the victim into the abuser and blames her for the crimes that are committed against her.

Whether she realises it or not, Naz Shah’s line of questioning  feeds into a “culture that incites religious hatred and violence towards those, especially from Muslim backgrounds, who are perceived to be apostates, atheists and non-conformists”.

This is especially true in a context where atheists are executed in 13 countries and incitement to violence, discrimination and shunning are pervasive, including in Britain – as was highlighted in a recent ITV documentary by award-winning filmmaker Deeyah Khan, Islam’s Non Believers.

And the threats of violence are not limited to ex-Muslims and atheists from Muslim backgrounds but all those who are seen to challenge Islamist norms of the “authentic Muslim”, including for example, Usama Hasan, above, an imam who was threatened in Pakistan and in Britain for his views on evolution and women’s rights, and secular Muslim women’s rights activists like Yasmin Rehman who have been branded “apostates” and “anti-faith” for speaking out against Sharia courts.

Hate crimes against those deemed “apostates” are on the rise, including against Christian covert from Islam Nissar Hussain who was forced to flee his home in Bradford with his family due to violence and threats in November 2016 and Ahmadiyya Asad Shah who was murdered in Glasgow in March 2016.

Sharia courts normalise discrimination against women but also incite violence against apostates, amongst others. Which is why their existence is of concern to ex-Muslims as well as society at large.

Sharia judges, for example, promote the death penalty for apostasy. Haitham al Haddad, above, who was until recently a Sharia judge at the Islamic Sharia Council, has said: “apostasy deserves, once the conditions are met, deserves capital punishment in an Islamic State and I can say this openly; I am not here to hide it“.

Suhaib Hasan, a co-founder of the Islamic Sharia Council in Leyton  is a member of The European Council for Fatwa and Research chaired by Yusuf al-Qaradawi who says that killing apostates is essential.

In the testimonies of women gathered by the One Law for All, Nadia Sadiq went before a judge at the Green Lane Mosque in Birmingham, which is a Salafi mosque where Abu Usamah has said women were created deficient and “whoever changes his religion, kill him“; Habiba Jan, went to a Sharia court judged by Anjem Choudary who defends the death penalty for apostasy and stoning to death for adultery. He has recently been jailed for urging support for ISIS.

Even questioning the competency or relevance of Sharia courts are equated with “disbelief”,  a form of kufr, which has serious penalties including the death penalty in some countries.

The Islamic Sharia Council, for example, has said (now deleted but screenshot available here):

As a Muslim we should know that our religion is perfect without any imperfection as Allah says: ‘this day, I have perfected your religion for you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion’.

Therefore, belittling them or calling them as out-of-date constitutes disbelief as Allah says.
Far from being harmless, Ms Shah’s allegations feed into a climate that targets dissenters.

Needless to say, it is not an insult to Islam or any religion, if one becomes an atheist – either in public or private. It is exercising a fundamental right to freedom of conscience.

Moreover, criticism of religion, including Islam, is not “Islamophobia” but exercising a fundamental right to freedom of expression.
Those who “punish” or forcibly prevent freedom of conscience and expression are the ones who commit a crime – not those exercising their basic human right.

It is high time that human rights and “progressive” organisations and personalities stop legitimising de-facto or de-jure blasphemy and apostasy laws and start defending, not blaming, Islamism’s victims.

Malta set to ban gay conversion therapy as Bill passes final hurdle

Added December 9, 2016

Bill to ban gay ‘conversion therapy’ passes through committee stage with added layers to ensure it won’t apply to regular psychological treatment

Gay conversion therapy is one step closer to being outlawed, after a Bill to criminalise the practice passed through committee stage tonight.
The Bill, which enjoys the unanimous support of all MPs, will see people who attempt to change, repress or eliminate a person’s sexual orientation receive a fine ranging between €1,000 and €5,000 or a jail term of five months.

The penance will be harsher for professionals – with fines envisaged between €2,000 and €10,000 or imprisonment of up to a year.

It will now only need to be formally approved in the third reading before passing into law.

Civil liberties minister Helena Dalli agreed to tweak the law to completely clarify that the law will not see psychiatrists, councellors and psychologists hauled up to court for psychological treatment that could be legally defined as “conversion therapy”.

Psychiatrist David Mamo warned that the original Bill was too vague and insisted that it include a phrase that specifically excludes all professional services intended to reduce psychological pain.

“School councellors are particularly concerned that they could be charged in court if they try and help children discover their true identity,” Mamo, who is vice-president of the Maltese Association of Psychiatry, said. “Indeed, councellors have told me that they will feel scared of seeing children if this Bill passes as it is.”

He also warned that the Bill could preclude psychology professionals from treating patients suffering from OCD or schizophrenia, who are fixated on their sexual orientation or identity as part of their mental illness.

Moreover, he said that psychologists could come under fire if a patient “enters treatment on a certain level on the sexual orientation scale and exit it on another level”.

“That could be defined as the councellor having changed that person’s sexual orientation,” he warned.

Another Bill that was passed through the committee will ensure that prisoners be housed in a prison that reflects their legal gender identity.

Danish doctors take a stand against infant circumcision

Added December 8, 2016

While stopping short of calling for a total ban on circumcision, the Danish Medical Association (Lægeforeningen) said in a weekend statement that no boys under the age of 18 be circumcised in Denmark.

The association said that circumcision should be “an informed, personal choice” that young men should make for themselves.

The association said that when parents have their male children circumcised, it robs the boys of the ability to make decisions about their own bodies and their own cultural and religious beliefs.

Lise Møller, the chairwoman of the association’s ethics board, said:

To be circumcised should be an informed, personal choice. It is most consistent with the individual’s right to self-determination that parents not be allowed to make this decision but that it is left up to the individual when he has come of age.

Lægeforeningen said that male circumcision carries a risk of complications and should only be performed on children when there is a documented medical need.

Regarding an outright ban, Møller said:

We have discussed it thoroughly, also in our ethics committee. We came to the conclusion that it is difficult to predict the consequences of a ban – both for the involved boys, who could for example face bullying or unauthorised procedures with complications – and for the cultural and religious groups they belong to.

The Danish Health and Medicines Authority (Sundhedsstyrelsen) estimates that somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 circumcisions are performed in Denmark each year, primarily on Jewish and Muslim boys.

The majority of those procedures occur outside of the public health system and are done in religious ceremonies in the child’s home or at private clinics.

There are thought to be an unknown number of circumcisions carried out each year that are not reported. Last year it was revealed that the State Serum Institute (SSI) had kept a database of circumcisions for 19 months despite never receiving legal authority to do so from the Danish Data Protection Agency (Datatilsynet).

That illegally-kept database was deleted in August 2015 but the Health Ministry announced on Monday that beginning in 2017 all circumcisions, regardless of where they take place, will need to be reported to Denmark’s national patient registry (Landspatientregistret).

According to a major 2007 study by the World Health Organization, roughly 30 percent of the global male population is circumcised. Of those, roughly two thirds are practising Muslims, while 0.8 percent are Jews.

Male circumcision regularly pops up as the subject of debate in Denmark and polls have shown that upwards of 87 percent of Danes have expressed support for banning the practise on boys under the age of 18.

Female circumcision, also known as female genital mutilation (FGM), is illegal in Denmark.

We need inverse mathematics

Erkki Hartikainen December 6, 2016

Our schools and our highschools are teaching mathematics which proceeds from simple structures to complicated structures. Universities are using axiomatix mathematics.

There are few practical areas: mathematics of physics and mathematics of statistics.

But if you meet a practical problem and you must find the correct mathematics for your problem you will have a big problem.

From Intenet you will find a typical school mathematics and if you are a hacker you will find the university mathematics.

I have been working several days to find simple and well classified inverese mathematics with no success.

What to do if you must find mathematics to your real problems.

If I were 50 years yunger I were willing to write such mathematics but I am too sick to do that.

Santa vs Jesus game slammed for being ‘blasphemous’

Added December 5, 2016

A Christmas-themed board game that pits Jesus against Santa ‘trivialises Christian belief’ by portraying the the two ‘as fictional characters’, according to Evangelical Alliance spokesman Danny Webster.

The BBC reports that Santa vs Jesus, made by London company Komo Games, is played by two teams – one for each of the festive figures – who battle through challenges in an attempt to win the most “believers”.

It was funded via crowd-sourcing site Kickstarter which said it was:

The most complained about game in history.

Webster says he believes a board game helping people learn about Jesus at Christmas would be “a great innovation” but he has a problem with the Santa vs Jesus game because:

It trivialises Christian belief and equates them both as fictional characters. With over 4 out of 10 people in the UK mistakenly thinking that Jesus was not a real historical person, this game won’t help correct that.

At its heart Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus and the gift of life he brings. Santa comes from the story of St Nicholas who as a Christian bishop was generous to the poor and was very happy to have Christ as his king. When it comes to Santa vs Jesus, we’re firmly on Team Jesus too.

Some of the opinions of reviewers on Amazon, where the game is for sale, are less measured and include allegations of blasphemy and disrespect:

One humourphobe wrote:

I dare you, creators of this game and Amazon, to make a game about Mohammed! You wouldn’t would you! Then why pick Jesus? Christians are currently soft targets so why not jump on the bandwagon!

game2

Another wrote:

I find it in the poorest of taste and offensive. Jesus (complete with nail holes in hands) and Santa with his followers and friends fighting over a Christmas tree. How upsetting, cheap and nasty to corrupt the beauty and meaning of Christmas in this way.

Despite the controversy, Santa vs Jesus was fully funded within days of the project going live, securing the £4,500 Kickstarter goal in 48 hours and eventually attracting more than £7,000 of investment.

One of the creators of the game, Julian Miller, says:

Sales are exceeding all expectations and we’ve had to rush through another order with our manufacturer to keep up with the demand.

Miller, along with David McGranaghan, came up with the game for a family Christmas party a few years ago.

The enthusiasm of our family and friends and the rise in popularity of games such as Cards Against Humanity and Exploding Kittens made us realise there was a gap in the market for a funny tongue-in-cheek game pitting Santa against Jesus.

For years people have wondered ‘who rules Christmas? Santa or Jesus?

Not everyone is enraged by the game, though.

One commentator wrote:

It looks enormous fun. I am a Christian and am not the least offended by anything I saw. Take it in the spirit it is meant to be played.

Woman gets death threats for not wearing headscarf

Added December 4, 2016

A Saudi woman who ventured out in Riyadh with her head uncovered sparked a flurry of death threats this week when she tweeted a picture of her defiant act.

According to this report, death threats were made against Malak Al Shehri, above, by outraged Muslims after her photo went viral.

“Kill her and throw her corpse to the dogs,” @ab_alshdadi wrote, while @ilQil tweeted “we want blood.” Many others insulted Shehri’s morals.

A 21-year-old student from the city of Dammam who called herself Sara Ahmed for fear that her real name could put her in danger shared Shehri’s tweet. Ahmed explained that Shehri tweeted to her followers from her account @AngelQShe, which has since been deleted, saying she was going out to breakfast without wearing a hijab or abaya.

Her followers asked her to post a picture. The photo began circulating throughout social media in Saudi Arabia, and Shehri immediately began receiving hateful messages.
Ahmed said:

So many people retweeted it and what she did reached extremists, so she got threats. She deleted her tweets but they didn’t stop, so she deleted her account.

But many other users came out in support of Shehri’s actions. @abuahmedalqarni wrote:

Just imagine one day you slept and then woke up to people calling for your imprisonment only because you changed your clothing. Now you know the extent of the oppression against women in Saudi Arabia.

@msafr2002 tweeted:

The people have reached such a dangerous stage of extremism that they demand the imprisonment of a girl because she changed the way she dressed, if she was a foreigner it’d be fine
.
Ahmed, who identifies as atheist, said this sort of behavior excluded women from even the simplest of freedoms.

I’m an atheist and I still wear the hijab in most places because that’s how society here is. I’s inexcusable to remove it, in fact, many of my atheist friends have to cover their faces because their families are more conservative than mine, and it’s not just atheists, many Muslim women want to remove them.

‘I’m not a terrorist’ says woman jailed for abortion clinic bomb

Added December 3, 2016

Despite having been jailed for plotting to bomb an abortion clinic, Cheryl Sullenger, above, senior Vice President of Operation Rescue, a ‘pro-life’ Christian outfit in the US, is a very angry over the use of the word ‘terrorist’ by Dr Warren Hern, a Colorado doctor who performs later abortions.

According to Jezebel, Sullenger, who was was convicted in 1988 with her husband for plotting to bomb the clinic, is furious that Hern published a full-page newspaper ad in the Denver Post in response to an investigation launched against him by the anti-abortion Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives, chaired by Tennessee Reprentative Marsha Blackburn.

In the ad, effectively an open letter to Blackburn, he accused the committee of harassment and reminded them of murders committed by “anti-abortion fanatics”.

He called the investigation a “callous, delusional witch hunt” and told Blackburn she is allying herself with what he calls a “terrorist movement”:

You and your Republican Party are vigorously allied with a violent terrorist movement that threatens the lives of women, their families and healthcare workers. As part of this sham ‘investigation’, your letter to me and letters to other physicians constitute a program of target identification for anti-abortion assassins. You can deny this, but it is a fact.

Your ‘investigation’ is legislative harassment that endangers our lives. The blood of any of us who are assassinated is on your hands.

Operation Rescue reprinted Hern’s ad in full and Sullenger wrote in a blog post that it was full of “wild conspiracy theories” and called it “crazy talk”.

And she’s very excised about calling any anti-abortion activist a “terrorist|:

Hern’s warped perception of the work of a peaceful pro-life movement that sacrifices to aid pregnant women and provide loving alternatives to abortion – acts that he considers “terrorism” — reveals how much Hern is deceived by his own fears and prejudices.

Sullenger, writes Anna Merlan of Jezebel:

Has said she ‘regrets’ trying to bomb the clinic, but Operation Rescue still engages in the targeted harassment of abortion providers and clinic employees. Operation Rescue head Troy Newman was denied a visa to travel in Australia last year because of governmental fears that his extreme rhetoric could prevent women from accessing healthcare or even stoke violence against providers.

And George Tiller was assassinated by a man who claimed to have met with Sullenger, and said she helped him track Tiller’s earlier court dates.
It’s clear that Operation Rescue now plans to try to depict Hern as mentally unstable: Sullenger writes that his ad ‘provoke[s] troubling questions about his loose tether to reality’.

Her show of indignation is really quite something, overall, and serves as a reminder that no matter what terrible things they’ve been convicted of doing and served prison time for, don’t you dare call an anti-abortion activist names. It hurts their feelings.

According to Wikipedia, Sullenger and her husband Randall were members of the Bible Missionary Fellowship, a fundamentalist church in Santee, California. On July 27, 1987, a member of that church attempted to bomb the Family Planning Associates abortion facility.

Sullenger provided a wig for co-conspirator Eric Everett Svelmoe, who planted the bomb. The gasoline bomb was placed at the premises but failed to detonate as the fuse was blown out by wind.

Sullenger and her husband both pleaded guilty to conspiring to damage the Alvarado Medical Center abortion clinic and publicly apologised for their involvement.Sullenger’s husband was sentenced to 18 months and she was sentenced to three years by US District Judge Earl B Gillam.
Sullenger served two years in US federal prison and was released in April 1990.

On completing her sentence, Sullenger taught children at a Christian school for seven years. She was also elected to the Central Committee of the 75th District of the San Diego Republican Party.

Rabbi exposed for running a circumcision racket in Israel

Added December 2, 2016

Rabbi Eliyahu Asulin, of Hadera, above, is being paid thousands by students wanting to become official mohels (circumcisers) and are being sent unsupervised to mutilate Ethiopian and Somalian infants.

According to this report, an investigation conducted by Kan, Israel’s new public broadcasting corporation, revealed that Asulin’s totally inexperienced students are conducting circumcisions among poor families, without accompanying them himself.

He described the young victims as being like “cannon fodder”.

Asulin, a rabbinate-approved mohel with over 30 years’ experience, explained to a Kan investigative journalist that he first instructs the students to make business cards describing their profession as “Mohel.” Then he tells them to distribute their cards at nurseries and post-natal clinics.

In a recording Asulin says:

I’ll lodge a mohel certificate in your name with the rabbinate. That will already give you a year’s head start.

The rabbi goes on to explain why the students practice on the babies in the weaker strata of the population:

Why not?. They have no father. No mother … There’s no problem. Even if your cut isn’t straight, they won’t say anything, because they don’t understand anything.

He later told the investigator – who by then had signed up for the course at a price of around £8,800:

They’re Ethiopians, you’re doing it to Ethiopians … There are the regular Ethiopians and then there are the Sudanese. They’re the worst. They’re as black as natives.

Asulin, according to the Kan investigation, is not the only mohel who sends students to practice on poor families. Kan says it has recorded conversations with others who do the same thing.

Asulin said in response that the video footage of him had been edited and that the exposé had been ordered by “political elements” in Hadera.

I have circumcised thousands of Ethiopian babies and I see it as a holy work. I will continue to dedicate my life to the public.

In a statement reported by Channel 2, the Chief Rabbinate said:

If the incidents described in the video are true, we see it as a very grave incident.

Indiana man warned off singing at his gran’s funeral

Added December 1, 2016

An Indiana man who attended a gay pride event has been refused permission by a Catholic church to sing at his grandmother’s funeral.

Connor Hakes, above, received a letter from Father Bob J Lengerich of St Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Indiana, saying that Hakes’ attendance at a gay rally a few years before could bring “scandal” to the church.

lengerich

Hakes shared the letter he received from Lengerich, above, on his Facebook page.

It said, in part:

I am sorry for the circumstances but I cannot allow you to serve at St Mary’s parish during Mass or any other official liturgy, including your grandmother’s funeral, until our present situation is resolved.

Your grandmother was such a beloved figure in our community … her funeral will not be a private, family service, but rather a celebration of her life and faith for our entire community, Catholics and non-Catholics alike.

I have the responsibility to address issues that could scandalise our congregation and neighbours.

The letter added that people who support “abortion rights and are openly participating in unchaste same-sex relationships” cannot perform in a position within the church.

Anytime someone sins and then acts in the name of God, it causes scandal. The Catholic Church upholds the dignity of those with same-sex attraction. At the same time, it does not permit same-sex relationships or openly advocating for them because it causes scandal.

To add insult to injury, the priest also seemed to “grant permission” for Connor to honour his grandmother:

As long as it is outside of the Mass and outside of the Church.

After posting the letter online, Connor added his grandparents would be “disgusted by their parish” and that they “loved everyone” regardless of sexual orientation.

Hundreds of people have commented on the post since it went up last week.

Although the majority have offered support to Connor, some have defended the priest’s decision.

Atheism has ancient roots and is not ‘modern invention’

Added April 1, 2016

Atheism is not a modern invention from the western Enlightenment, but actually dates back to the ancient world, according to a new book by a Cambridge academic – which challenges the assumption that humanity is naturally predisposed to believe in gods.

In Battling the Gods, Tim Whitmarsh, professor of Greek culture at Cambridge University, lays out a series of examples showing that atheism existed in polytheistic ancient Greece. It is, according to its author, partly “an attempt to excavate ancient atheism from underneath the rubble heaped on it by millennia of Christian opprobrium”.

Early atheists were making what seem to be universal objections about the paradoxical nature of religion. Disbelief in the supernatural is as old as the hills. It is only through profound ignorance of the classical tradition that anyone ever believed that 18th-century Europeans were the first to battle the gods.

“We tend to see atheism as an idea that has only recently emerged in secular western societies. The rhetoric used to describe it is hyper-modern. In fact, early societies were far more capable than many since of containing atheism within the spectrum of what they considered normal,” said Whitmarsh.

“Rather than making judgments based on scientific reason, these early atheists were making what seem to be universal objections about the paradoxical nature of religion – the fact that it asks you to accept things that aren’t intuitively there in your world. The fact that this was happening thousands of years ago suggests that forms of disbelief can exist in all cultures, and probably always have.”

In the fourth century BC, he points to Plato, as the philosopher imagines a believer chastising an atheist:

“You and your friends are not the first to have held this view about the gods! There are always those who suffer from this illness, in greater or lesser numbers.”

“We may balk at his disease imagery,”

writes Whitmarsh,

“but Plato was surely right in his general point. There have been many throughout history and across all cultures who have resisted belief in the divine.”

Because you disbelieved things that are not unbelievable, your name from now on shall be Disbeliever (Apistos)
The god Asclepius, to a man who mocked miracle cures
These range from Carneades, head of the Platonic academy in the second century BC, who argued that

“belief in gods is illogical”,

to the Epicureans, who were often called atheoi in antiquity, and the atheistic writings of Xenophanes of Colophon.

Whitmarsh argues that the diversity of ancient Greece’s polytheistic societies meant there was no such thing as religious orthodoxy, and no clergy laying out how people should live. This meant, he said, that while atheism could be viewed as mistaken, it was usually tolerated – although not in the case of Socrates, who was executed in Athens for “not recognising the gods of the city.

Ehdotus lukion opetuksen järkiperäistämiseksi

Suomen Ateistiyhdistys ry. kannattaa kaikkien mielipideaineiden poistamista kouluista. Erityisesti oman uskonnon opetus on mielipideopetusta.
