Sosialidemokratian korruptio heikentää ateistien ihmisoikeuksia

Erkki Hartikainen 31.09.2016

Vladimir Lenin lakkasi kutsumasta itseään sosialidemokraatiksi, kun sosialidemokraatit taistelivat toisiaan vastaan sodissa.

Liikkeen vähäiset jäänteet ovat tulleet korruption loppupisteekseen: sosialidemokraattisten puolueiden johtajiksi pyrkivät alkavat kosiskella kirkkoja.

Kummallisin esimerkki on sosialidemokraattien eduskuntaryhmä puheenjohtaja Antti Lindtman. Hän on ryhtynyt käymään luterilaista rippikoulua päästäkseen puolueen puheenjohtajaksi.

Mäntsälän kirkkovaltuustossa istunut Antti Rinne jatkakoon sosialidemokraattisen puolueen johdossa, koska Lindtman ei tuo puolueeseen mitään parannusta.

Uskonnollistyyppinnen autoritaarinen ajattelu on erityisen vaarallista pohjoisessa sijaitsevissa maissa

Erkki Hartikainen 29.10.2016

Henrietta Hassinen / Yle

maryam

Iranilaissyntyinen ihmisoikeusaktivisti Maryam Namazie ajaa sharia-oikeuksien kieltämistä Britanniassa.

Britanniassa toimii 30–100 sharia-neuvostoa.

Sharia-oikeudet ratkovat useimmiten musliminaisten oikeutta avioeroon.

SHARIA-JÄRJESTELMÄ on toiminut Britanniassa jo 1980-luvulta lähtien poliittisten päättäjien hiljaisella hyväksynnällä.

Pääministeri Theresa May käynnisti toukokuussa sisäministerinä toimiessaan sharia-selvityksen. Parlamentin alahuoneen sisäasioiden valiokunnassa on käynnissä toinen selonteko. Selvitykset valmistuvat ensi vuonna.

”Monista naisista on tullut sharia-neuvostojen syrjivien päätösten uhreja.

May sanoi keväällä.

IRANILAISSYNTYINEN ihmisoikeusaktivisti Maryam Namazie on taistellut sharia-lainkäyttöä vastaan jo pitkään. Hän johtaa Britanniassa 2008 perustettua One Law for All -järjestöä (sama laki kaikille).

”Brutaali sharia-systeemi on käytössä Iranissa.

Namazie kertoo salaisella Lontoon-toimistollaan.

Naisten oikeudet on uhrattu ensimmäisinä.”

NAMAZIE pakkaa toimistolla lukemista brittikansanedustajille. Tietokirja sharia-oikeudesta ja naisten alisteisesta asemasta on lähdössä parlamentaarikoille.

Ihmisoikeusaktivistit Rayhana Sultan, Daniel Fitzgerald ja Maryam Namazie pakkaavat kirjalähetyksiä brittiläisille kansanedustajille. Tarkoitus on päivittää parlamentaarikkojen tietoja naisten alisteisesta asemasta islamiin nojaavassa sharia-järjestelmässä.

”Internet vapauttaa muslimit aivan kuten kirjapaino aikoinaan alkoi vapauttaa kristittyjä”,

Namazie sanoo.

Britanniassa asuva saksalainen yliopisto-opettaja Chris Moos vastustaa uskonnon nojalla harjoitettavaa erottelua. Hänestä monikulttuurisuudesta on tullut tekosyy soveltaa eri sääntöjä eri ihmisryhmiin. Britanniassa asuva saksalainen yliopisto-opettaja Chris Moos vastustaa uskonnon nojalla harjoitettavaa erottelua.

Hänestä monikulttuurisuudesta on tullut tekosyy soveltaa eri sääntöjä eri ihmisryhmiin.
Vieraiden kulttuurien ja uskontojen yliymmärtäminen johtaa ihmisoikeusloukkauksiin.

Väitöskirjaansa London School of Economicsissa tehdessään Moos huomasi, että islamin varjolla saatettiin kyseenalaistaa yleiset tasa-arvokäsitykset.

Are science and religion compatible?

Euroopan pohjoisimmat noitavainot riehuivat Lapin naapurissa Norjan Finnmarkissa 1600-luvulla. Noitina poltettujen naisten ja miesten muistoksi pystytetty muistomerkki vetää Pohjois-Norjan Vuoreijaan matkailijoita ympäri maailman.

Ikuinen tuli palaa Jäämeren rannalla Vardøssä eli Vuoreijassa noituudesta poltettujen muistoksi. Tuli sytytettiin Juhannusaattona 2011. Silloin Norjan kuningatar Sonja avasi Steilnesetin noitavainojen muistomerkin.

Tällä samalla rannalla poltettiin oikeasti roviolla naisia ja miehiä 1600-luvulla. Paikallinen alioikeus oli tuominnut heidät kuolemaan noituudesta.

Steilnesetin muistomerkki koostuu kahdesta rakennuksesta. Norjalaisilta muistomerkki on saanut nimen Heksemonument, Noitamonumentti.

Teos on maailmankuulun ranskalais-yhdysvaltalaisen taiteilijan Louise Bourgoisen viimeinen suuri työ. Taiteilija kuoli ennen muistomerkin valmistumista.

Elettiin Euroopan senkertaisten noitavainojen loppusuoraa. Suomessa kuolemaan tuomittujen määrä on arvioitu runsaaksi sadaksi ihmiseksi.

Oikeushistorioitsija Heikki Ylikangas on arvioinut, että Mooseksen lain tulo oikeuslähteeksi uuden ajan alussa lisäsi vainon sytykkeitä Euroopassa.

Varangin museon konservaattori Synnøve Eikevik sanoo, että vainoille on monta selitystä.

– Vainojen syytä on vaikea selittää. Syy liittyy uskontoon ja kansanuskomuksiin. Myös kuningas pyrki julistamaan uuden uskonnon eli protestanttisuuden tulon, koska aiemmin oli oltu katolilaisia., sanoo Synnøve Eikevik.

Finnmarkissa tuomioita antoivat ajan lakien mukaan paikalliset alioikeudet. Syytteeseen joutui 135, kuolemaan tuomittiin 91 ihmistä. Määrä on harvaan väkilukuun suhteutettuna Euroopan ennätys.

Malesia on muslimienemmistöinen maa. Islamilaisen kehityksen viraston halal-osaston johtaja Sirajuddin Suhaimee perusteli päätöstä uskonnolla.

Halal tarkoittaa islamissa puhdasta. Mikäli Malesiassa myydään jatkossa hot dogeja (sananmukaisesti ”kuumia koiria”), niiltä evätään halal-sertifiointi.

Muhammed ennusti maailmanlopun käynnistyvän Dabiqin taistelusta

Lisätty 18.10.2016

Isis-taistelijat ovat jopa houkutelleet ulkomaisia joukkoja hyökkäämään Dabiqiin, jotta apokalyptinen viimeinen taistelu saataisiin käyntiin.

Maailmanloppu jäi tulematta

Turkin tukemat Vapaan Syyrian armeijan (FSA) joukot ovat vallanneet Isis-järjestöltä uskonnollisesti tärkeän Dabiqin pikkukaupungin.

Hyökkäys käynnistyi aamulla Turkin tykistön ja ilmavoimien tuella. Puoleenpäivään mennessä Isis oli ajettu ulos kaupungista ja rintamalinjan kerrotaan asettuneen parin kilometrin päähän kaupungin eteläpuolelle.

Taistelusta odotettiin erittäin kiivasta, koska Dabiqilla on erityinen merkitys islamin historiassa.

Mikä Venäjällä on vialla?

Erkki Hartikainen 17.10.2016

Putin on täysjärkinen.

Erkki Hartikainen 16.10.2016

Intiassa ateistien kokous keskeytettiin uskonnollisten johtajien vastustuksen vuoksi.

Hänen teloitustaan lykättiin, kunnes vauva on syntynyt.

Amnesty International vetoaa Zeinabin puolesta.

Adressin on tähän mennessä allekirjoittanut yli 300 000 ihmistä.

Aborttien määrä Venäjällä on laskenut merkittävästi Neuvostoliiton hajottua.

Kymmenvuotias tyttärenpoika, jonka erikoisharrastus on elektroniikka, purki tulostimen.

Muun muassa oppositiossa oleva työväenpuolue on ajanut kasvot peittävien huivien kieltoa oppilaitoksissa. Vielä syyskuussa maahanmuuttoministeri Sylvi Listahaug totesi NRK:lle, ettei hallitus puoltaisi kansallista kieltoa.

Norja on yksi monista Euroopan maista, joissa musliminaisten pukeutumista on haluttu säädellä viime aikoina.

Ranskassa syntyi hiljattain kova keskustelu paikallista kielloista käyttää uima-asu burkinia.

Sveitsissä parlamentin alahuone äänesti viime viikolla niukasti valtakunnallisen burkakiellon puolesta, mutta lain voimaantulo riippuu vielä liittovaltion kantonien tahdosta.

HS Varsovassa: Puolan naiset pukeutuvat mustaan protestina aborttikiellolle – ”Tämä on ihmisoikeuskysymys”

Lisätty 4.10.2016

Aborttikielto on parlamentin käsittelyssä

Samalla laki uhkaa viedä naisilta mahdollisuuden raskausajan terveystarkastuksiin, joissa on pieni keskenmenon riski. Lääkärit voisivat joutua rikosvastuuseen sikiön kuolemasta. Pelkona on, että keskenmenon saaneista naisista tulisi epäilyksen kohteita.

Parlamentissa etenevä abortin täyskielto on nostattanut poliittisen myrskyn Puolassa. Osana ”mustaa protestia” on järjestetty useita mielenilmauksia syyskuusta alkaen.

Valtapuolueen toimiston edessä järjestetty mielenosoitus oli osa maanantaina järjestettyä naisten lakkoa, jossa naiset jäivät pois töistä ja opinnoista ja pukeutuivat mustaan. Väri symboloi päätösvallan menettämistä omasta kehosta.

Kaisa Rautaheimo / HS
Jopa tuhannet naiset osallistuivat Puolassa maanantaina naisten lakkoon, jolla vastustettiin parlamentissa etenevää abortin täyskieltoa. Mukana Varsovan mielenosoituksessa olivat Katja Simekova (vas.), Zuzanna Rutkowska (kesk.) ja Helena Urbanska (oik.).
Jopa tuhannet naiset osallistuivat Puolassa maanantaina naisten lakkoon, jolla vastustettiin parlamentissa etenevää abortin täyskieltoa. Mukana Varsovan mielenosoituksessa olivat Katja Simekova (vas.), Zuzanna Rutkowska (kesk.) ja Helena Urbanska (oik.).

Tarkkoja lukuja osallistujamäärästä on mahdotonta arvioida, mutta mustiin pukeutuneet naiset erottuivat selvästi Varsovan katukuvassa. Facebookissa maanantain lakkoon kertoi osallistuvansa Puolassa yli satatuhatta naista. Tukimielenosoituksia järjestettiin ympäri Eurooppaa, myös Helsingissä.

Wilamowska muistuttaa, että Puolassa tehdään jatkuvasti laittomia abortteja. Tuhannet puolalaisnaiset matkustavat vuosittain ulkomaisille klinikoille abortin vuoksi. Arvioiden mukaan Puolassa tehdään vuosittain 50 000–200 000 laitonta aborttia. Laillisia abortteja tehdään 1 000–2 000.

”Meillä on Puolassa sanonta.

”No, tälläkin hetkellä vain harva ilmoittaa raiskauksesta.

Hänen mielestään aborttioikeutta puolustavat naiset leimataan huoriksi, ihan kuin he suhtautuisivat siihen kevyesti.

Katolista kirkkoa lähellä olevalla PiS:llä on parlamentissa yli puolet paikoista.

Ateisti on henkilö, jonka mielestä ateismi on tosi.

Agnostikon eli jumalaongelmaisen määritelmä

Agnostikko eli jumalaongelmainen on henkilö, joka ei mielestään tiedä, onko ateismi tosi vai onko teismi tosi.

Uskonnon määritelmä

Uskonto on järjestäytynyttä teismiä.

Arizona dental assistant sworn at for refusing a free Bible

Added October 31, 2016

Mikey Weinstein, founder and President of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, stepped in to defend a dental assistant who claims he was abused after refusing a Bible from a group of Christians who infiltrated a Phoenix hospital.

According to this report, Jesse Gonzales, a dental assistant at the Carl T Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center, was on a break when three men at a table offered him a free Bible.

Gonzales, an Air Force veteran, says he politely refused and proceeded into the canteen to purchase a snack.

However, when he was solicited again on the return trip, Gonzales says he asked whether the group was authorised to promote religion on federal property.

As Gonzales tells it, the youngest evangelist reacted angrily, using the “F” word and claiming to have VA authorisation as well as a legal right to pass out scriptures.

Weinstein says he was stunned by Gonzales’ experience, and contacted the hospital’s then-acting Director, Shawn Bransky, who agreed the incident was not handled appropriately.

Gonzales, who is affiliated the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, says a crowd gathered as the argument erupted into shouted expletives on both sides.

Two VA police officers showed up and escorted him Gonzales away. They insisted he leave while the religious handouts continued.

These guys weren’t even supposed to be there. And here they were yelling at me? I believe in the Constitution. … But then the police hauled me away.

Weinstein said the problem goes deeper because other religious organisations also solicit inside the Phoenix VA hospital, including at least one Christian university.

This does not appear to be an isolated incident. You can’t engage the machinery of the state – the awesome power of federal government – to push your faith.

A hospital spokesman said the Bible distributors represented Native American Marriage Enhancement, a Pentecostal ministry. The group’s website says it is operated by John and Doris Knoles in affiliation with Dream City Church, formerly Phoenix First Assembly, and exists:

To provide free collegiate-level Pentecostal biblical and marital studies to our First Nations for spiritual growth and familial enrichment.

Gonzales says he tried to lodge a complaint internally, then contacted Mikey Weinstein.

Gonzales says Bransky later apologised, noting that the Bible group was unauthorised and promised to issue an explanatory email to VA employees.

Gonzales says he was thrilled at the positive response – until he saw message Bransky circulated. It said that the Bible distributors were denied a solicitation permit by the Phoenix VA Employees Association and “did not act in good faith.” It also offered regrets from the association to anyone “inadvertently offended”.

But Gonzales says the message amounted to a “slap in the face” for him and other upset veterans because it did not address his embarrassment at being treated “like some sort of criminal”.

God tells Philippine President Duterte to stop swearing

Added October 30, 2016

The Almighty apparently frowns on vulgar language, and although he is yet to admonish Donald Trump, he did take a break from his busy schedule to tell Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to stop using naughty words.

Duterte, according to the BBC, was on a flight home after a visit to Japan when he heard a warning from God.

After he deplaned, the President told reporters:

I heard a voice telling me to stop swearing or the plane will crash in mid-air, and so I promised to stop.

Duterte’s blunt speaking, often directed at the West, has contributed to his popularity at home.

He called President Barack Obama and the Pope a “son of a whore”, said the European Union was “hypocritical”, threatened to leave the UN and accepted comparisons to Hitler, saying he would gladly kill three million drug addicts.

All were responses to criticisms of his bloody war on drugs, that has seen thousands of alleged drug dealers and users killed by police and vigilante groups.

The lunatic, a Roman Catholic, said he had promised God he would not “express slang, cuss words and everything”, and said:

A promise to God is a promise to the Filipino people.

But he suggested his promise might have its limits. Whether he will stick to not swearing when talking about the US, EU or arch political foe Senator Leila de Lima, will depend on timing, local media quoted him as saying.

The president has spoken about being abused by an American priest as a child, saying that informed his political views.

He recently said that the Philippines wanted “a separation” from the “Zionist States of America”, and wanted American troops to leave the country, possibly within two years.

Patriarch Kirill accuses Church of England of being too liberal

Added October 29, 2016

The Russian news agency Interfax has reported that Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, above right, voiced concern to the Archbishop of Canterbury, left, that the Anglican Church is deviating from the norms of the Christian teaching.

Interfax said that the patriarch, who visited London last week, had told Archbishop of Canterbury:

That the Russian Orthodox Church is seriously concerned with liberalisation of the teaching of the Anglican Church in questions of church rules – consecration of women to priests and bishops, and in morals and family issues.

Kirill’s spokesman Alexander Volkov told the journalists prior to Kirill’s return to Moscow that the patriarch expressed hope that the Church of England:

Will oppose the challenges of the modern world and try to preserve the Gospels teaching.

Curiously, Interfax appears to be the only site to carry this news item, but theCatholic Herald reported that Kirill’s visit to celebrate 300 years of the presence of Russian Orthodoxy in the British Isles had been criticised by UK MPs and Ukraine.

Labour MP John Woodcock said that it was “very troubling” for someone so closely associated with the current Russian government to be welcomed to Buckingham Palace at a time when Russia is supporting:

A murderous Syrian regime.

Woodcock’s fellow Labour MP, Alison McGovern, said the visit was:

An inappropriate PR opportunity.

Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK, Natalia Galibarenko, reportedly said that Britain’s hosting of the patriarch risked legitimising Russia’s aggression in her country and described the patriarch as:

A Kremlin mouthpiece.

Around 1,000 people gathered in London’s Russian Orthodox cathedral to witness the consecration of the building, conducted by Kirill.

Welby was in attendance at the historic service at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God and All Saints in Knightsbridge.

In an address after the service, Patriarch Kirill said:

The Church is a community open to everyone, [it] erases all human controversies. Even a very rich man stands next to the poor one, high-ranking officials stand next to the common people.

The Church should also play a role in international relations. Through faith, through the Church the soul of a nation is manifested.

Iran’s top Koran reciter stands accused of raping his students

Added October 28, 2016

Saeed Toosi, 46, above, one of Iran’s most celebrated Koran readers, has been accused of sexually assaulting a number of his students aged between 12 ad 14 over a period of seven years.

According to this report, Toosi – once descibed an “exemplary model to be followed” by Ali Khamenei, current Supreme Leader of Iran –
represented Iran in the international Koranic competition and won the first prize.

In a television programme broadcasted by The Persian Voice of America, three of his victims said that they have written evidence and audio recordings clearly pointing to Toosi in which he admitted in his own handwriting that his actions were a “mistake”.

In an audio recording , Toosi is heard saying the that Khamenei is well aware of the situation, and had agreed with the head of the judiciary authority Sadek Larijani to cover up the case in order to safeguard the reputation of the Koranic institution in Iran.

One of the victims, a first prize winner in a recent Koranic competition, alleged that Toosi took advantage of him when he was his companion during a competition abroad. He booked a hotel room in which he molested and raped the then 12-year-old.

The victims added that they filed complaints against the Koranic reader to officials in the House of the Leadership after they were were advised to. But officials ignored their claims after they received a “repentance letter “ in which where Toosi admitted his wrondoing and claimed “he is a changed man”.

A later Al-Arabiya report says that a spokesman for Iran’s judiciary, Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, confirmed that Toosi stands accused of raping 19 children and that his case had been passed to an expert judge to decide and rule .

During a press conference, Mohseni-Ejei said that the court had charged Toosi with “advocating corruption” after four victims filed complaints against him .

It’s anyone’s guess whether Toosi will ever face trial because it’s reported that the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution is planning to assassinate him to put an end to the scandal.

It is also reported that Toosi threatened that, if he were to be prosecuted, he would to leak the names of 100 of Iran’s high profile officials who  raped and molested children.

Catholic Church Has New Guidelines on Cremation (Because Controlling You During Life Isn’t Enough)

AddedOctober 27, 2016
by Hemant Mehta

The Catholic Church has been on a kick lately, trying to make life more complicated for believers as they’re dying — or right after it happens.

We saw earlier this month that Catholic hospitals in Canada forbid doctors from helping terminally ill patients end their own lives, even though it’s legal in the country. That decision prolongs patients’ suffering and serves as nothing more than torture porn for the bishops making these decisions. The Catholic Bishops of Alberta and the Northwest Territories also told priests to refuse conducting funerals for patients who died on their own terms — adding insult to injury for the families they leave behind.

Now, the Vatican has issued new guidelines about how to handle cremations, which have become increasingly popular even among Catholics who choose that route over more traditional burials.

shutterstock_344380589

The guidelines essentially punish anyone who opts for cremation if their reasons are at odds with Catholic teaching.

Want to become “one with the Earth”? You’re violating doctrine.

Want to spread your ashes over Wrigley Field after the Cubs win the World Series? Not if you want to remain in the good graces of the Church.

Want to preserve some of your ashes in jewelry so it can be worn by your children and grandchildren? The Pope ain’t having it.

Want to keep the ashes in an urn in your home? Even that doesn’t get a free pass.

Beyond respect for the deceased, the document notes that burial in a cemetery “encourages family members and the whole Christian community to pray for and remember the dead, while at the same time fostering the veneration of martyrs and saints.”

Burial prevents the forgetting of the loved one, as well as “unfitting or superstitious practices,” the document states.

For that reason, the Vatican said that cremation urns should not be kept at home, save for “grave and exceptional cases dependent on cultural conditions of a localized nature.”

Burial also takes up unnecessary space and suggests that there’s something special about a dead body six feet underground. As if cremating your body or donating it to science somehow makes God unhappy, because — you never know — what if He wants to reanimate your corpse?

All these new rules do is limit options for Catholics. Color outside the lines and the Church will make you pay for it. We already know the Church wants to dictate how you live your life. Now they want to regulate your death, too? I guess it’s never too late to make believers feel guilty.

A deceased loved one, said [Italian Rev. Roberto] Salsa, should be in a place “accessible to everyone, where they can be venerated,” so a cemetery is preferable to a home. And scattering ashes can be “misunderstood as a sort of religion of nature, while we believe in resurrection,” he said. “It’s important to insist on that.”

That makes no sense at all. Even if you believe in resurrection, what’s stopping God from putting your ashes back together? He can bring a dead body back to life, but he can’t put together a human jigsaw puzzle?

None of this, however, means that Catholics will actually follow the new guidelines. After all, it’s not like they care what their religious leaders have to say about homosexuality or abortion. 58% of practicing Catholics support marriage equality, even though the Church condemns it, while well over 40% of Catholics believe abortion should be legal in most or all cases.

If so many Catholics can’t get on board when it comes to two of the most polarizing social issues in our country, why would guidelines from the Vatican make a damn bit of difference?

I hope cafeteria Catholics, who pick and choose which aspects of their faith to adopt, see this as Vatican overreach and decide once and for all to sever all ties with the Church.

God won’t be upset if you cremate your body. God doesn’t give a damn. Live your life and plan your death however you’d like

Abortion: Polish Government sparks a fresh wave of fury

Added Octoner 26, 2016

A Polish politician’s insistence that foetuses that stand no chance of survival should be allowed to be born so that they can be baptised before they die has provoked fresh demonstrations.

According to this report, massive protests erupted in Poland on Monday as women in cities across the country donned black in protest of a proposal to ban abortions in cases where foetuses were severely deformed or unable to survive after birth.

Thedemonstrations were a continuation of the “Black Monday” protests that helped defeat a proposed near-total ban of abortion that would have allowed women who underwent abortions – and the doctors who performed them – to be jailed for up to five years.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski, champion of the new proposal and head of the ruling Law and Justice party, said earlier this month that he and his party wanted to ensure that even foetuses:

Certain to die, very deformed, still end up in a birth, so that the child can be baptised.

Protesters condemned the government’s latest attempt at restricting abortion, called for better sex education and birth control, and criticised the Roman Catholic Church for undue “interference” in the country’s politics and public education.

Dorota Szumilak, a 44-year-old financial analyst, said that as a Lutheran she felt discriminated against in a country where the Catholic Church organises religion classes in schools.

Agata Rybka, a 24-year-old biotechnology student who helped oversee a petition signing in central Warsaw said:

We want to live in a secular society. Right now religious issues dominate public discourse and we don’t like it.

Under Poland’s current abortion law, termination of a pregnancy is only permissible in cases of rape, irreparable damage to a foetus, or when a woman’s life is at risk.

EXTENDED INTERVIEW WITH MARYAM NAMAZIE

Added Octiober 25, 2016

How did you get involved in activism?

I became an activist as a result of my own life experiences after an Islamic regime took power in Iran. We fled the country. One of the first ways in which I got politically involved was in doing refugee rights work.

My family and so many we knew had become refugees and it was a way of dealing with the trauma of losing everything and starting all over again – somewhere completely new – and at times unwelcoming.

It followed too, that I would be active against theocracy and religious rules, and for people’s rights. The best way you can fight repression is to refuse and resist. I didn’t set out to be an activist; in many ways I was forced into it.

I had no choice but to fight back in the best way I knew how. Also when you are faced with such inhumanity – like the Islamic regime of Iran – the best fight back has to be fundamentally human.

Was there support from parents, siblings, or others for you?

My family has always been supportive of me. That’s why it has been easy for me to be an activist. Also, my partner is an activist. I’ve really always had a lot of support.

I can’t imagine people who not only don’t have the support of their families, but are being beaten and abused because of their beliefs. I think it makes it so much more difficult. Doesn’t it? It still astonishes me people like that can still be active and speak out.

I have met a lot of very vocal women. Many of them say they’ve had supportive parents and fathers. I think that’s key when you’re an activist. Obviously, you can be vocal without family support, but it helps a great deal.

Speaking of human rights as well as women rights, which are somewhat separated but definitely overlap, do you note that more of the rights violations are women’s in general?

Obviously, I think rights are violated across the board, but because women are seen to be more vulnerable, they are seen to be the property of the community, the society, the family’s honor, the society’s national honour, it makes it easier to target them. And often the abuse is legitimised in ways that other abuses aren’t.

As a result, violence against women is more acceptable in many ways. In that sense, one of the greatest violations of human rights is in the area of women’s rights.

Some of the more tragic and dramatic examples are violations of women’s bodies through things such as tens of millions of women having female genital mutilation, infibulation, clitoridectomy, and so on, against their will, even as girls.

Does that seem, along with others, more religiously motivated or not?

I think there are obviously non-religious motivations for those violations, but very often religion also justifies and legitimises it, and gives it divine sanction in ways that other justifications don’t – which makes it all the more dangerous.
You are working on a new film.

What is the content and purpose of that film?

The film is on Islam’s non-believers. It’s been made by Deeyah Khan, who is an award-winning film maker. Her previous films have been about honor killing as well as Jihadis.

And this one is about Islam’s non-believers. It looks at the situation of young people, particularly in Britain, who are facing discrimination and abuse because they’ve decided to be atheists. Often, including from their families and the larger communities that they live in. The film also links to the international situation.

You see the links between Bangladeshi Islamists hacking atheists to death in Bangladeshand also threatening atheists right here in Britain. People who are respected, people who are so-called ‘community leaders’. It shows that Islamism is an international movement that targets apostates.

It also shows the ex-Muslim resistance as an international movement and how it too is an important way of pushing back the Islamists by opening up the space to question and debate, and criticise religion, even to renounce religion. The ability to do it despite the risks involved.

The American Massachusetts Institute of Technology trained and Tufts University based philosopher and cognitive scientist professor, Daniel Dennett, did something similar to that. He looked into pastors, ministers, and preachers who had lost their faith and continued to preach.

There’s a decent amount who’ve lost their faith and continued to preach. I haven’t seen the precise results, but this seems like a similar case. A possibly relatively common phenomena of people putting on the ‘face’ such as the engaging in practices and wearing the clothing in public, but not holding the beliefs sincerely or simply not believing.

Do you know of the numbers of non-believers in Islam, but are putting on that face – so to speak?

Yea, also, there are 13 countries that execute apostates and atheists. There’s also a huge amount of threats and intimidation. The numbers are much larger than we can imagine because of the many risks involved. Social media and the internet are doing to Islam what the printing press did to Christianity.

So, it is opening the way to challenge it in a way that hasn’t been possible because of the risks that are involved. My opinion is its a tsunami of millions. It really is the case that there are atheists in every family, in every home, in every neighbourhood, in every country.

There are many of them. We can see it now via social media. What we see, though, is still the tip of the iceberg. We have many members living in Britain, which is a relatively safe place to live.

There are no apostasy rules, but people continue to wear the veil, go to mosque, and continue to say they’re Muslims when they are atheists.

I think if the pressure of the Islamist movement is removed, if that movement is pushed back in the way political Christianity was pushed back by an Enlightenment, the world will be surprised by the sheer number of non-believers. I think even we will be surprised by it.

On the fringe of that sector of people, that sub-population within the community will be those that simply had over time their fundamentalist beliefs softened and liberalised quite a bit.

Do you think that would be a much larger population – that sector would then move into non-believing as well?

Definitely, I think that is the case. I mean, of course, no community or society is homogenous. There are so many differences of opinion. The problem is we live in an era where communities are homogenised.

Very often, those in power are seen to be the representatives of those communities. In the so-called Muslim community, Islamists are seen as the authentic Muslims and representatives. I think many people are forced to keep up appearances, even if they don’t believe.

Time will reveal all, but already we’re seeing the extent of it. If anyone is interested in seeing it, is interested in accepting that there’s diversity and dissent in what is considered a homogenous group, it is very easy to see.

And it is on the increase. A convert was telling me that the Islamists always talk about how many people are converting into Islam, but we never hear about many of those converts who then decide to leave Islam and to become atheists.

We hear it is the fastest growing religion. We never hear about all of those people running for their lives in the opposite direction.

(Laugh)

Things are skewed in the favour of religion because religion is privileged anyway. No matter what society you live in. But when it is imposed, very often by brute force, by the Islamist movement, the numbers can never really be revealed.

But you can get a really good sense of it. When we started #ExMuslimBecause, we were expecting to have a couple of hundred people respond. We even thought, “Let’s do it a few weeks in advance of December 10th, International Human Rights Day, so, we can build up on it and gather a few hundred statements.”
It went viral in 24 hours. There were over 120,000 tweets from 65 different countries. Again, that is still the tip of the iceberg, really.

At this point in time, how do you self-identify in terms of irreligious/religious beliefs as well as socio-political beliefs?

I have a big problem with identity politics. I think it’s regressive as it tries to pigeonhole people into groups of constructed identities. It refuses to acknowledge that people are multifaceted. They have so many different characteristics that define them or they define themselves with.

For me, even the whole ex-Muslim movement is not about identity politics, I know it is for some people, but it is about a political challenge to the Islamist movement, to discrimination and violence against apostates, and it is one way of highlighting that.

It also challenges the view that the “Muslim community” is a homogenous community. If you have ex-Muslims, millions of people who don’t want to be considered Muslim anymore, it challenges multiculturalism as a social policy. I personally have political positions and ideals, which, for me, mark who I stand with irrespective of background or belief.

I am a secularist, for example. I will stand with Muslims and ex-Muslims, and non-Muslims, in support of secularism. I might be an atheist, but I don’t necessarily agree with all atheists on all issues. I am pro-refugee rights and against profiling of Muslims, for example.

I am old-fashioned in the sense that I think we need to build solidarity around political ideals, rather than around ridiculous limiting identities, which narrow the allies we can have and put us amongst those who aren’t necessarily our allies because they fit within a narrow identity.

Unfortunately, this is old-fashioned, but that’s how political organizing has always been done. It has been done irrespective of one’s background, beliefs, and identity around specific political ideals.

I think that’s why we’re in the mess we are in today because we are not able to see our allies and our enemies given the bogus identity politics.
I want to shift the conversation to some of the things you mentioned at the beginning about refugees. In the early 21st century, we have a singular tragedy with the Syrian refugee crisis.

How do you think countries in Europe are managing and handling refugees as well as the crisis at large?

For me, the refugee issue is a human rights issue – in the same way that I don’t think you should stop people using a hospital because they are undocumented and an EU citizen rather than a British born citizen or exclude people based on age, sex, race, or belief, I don’t think you should stop people from gaining protection.

It doesn’t matter where you fled from and where you seek refuge, you must be granted protection. It’s a basic human right.

People who have never had to worry about getting visas or fleeing for their lives might find it hard to understand the desperation – to have to leave everything you know – the language, the society, your work, your family, your loved ones, sometimes even sending your children on their own (unaccompanied minors) because you have no other hope of saving them. You send them off on this perilous journey and don’t even know if they will make it alive.

From my perspective, we should do everything and anything we can to help people. In the same way, I think everyone who needs healthcare should have it. Everyone who needs housing should have it. I don’t understand why we should have homeless people. I don’t understand why there are children who go to bed hungry in this country. I also don’t understand why refugees shouldn’t be given protection and safety.

I know of course it is because profit is more important than human need, and differences amongst us are more deemed more important than our common humanity but I don’t see why it should be that way.

Also, rights are not contingent on whether you like or agree with those demanding it. Sometimes the refugee issue is muddled up because people want to run an inquisition before deciding whether someone is eligible for this right.

My perspective is that even if a person’s views are disgusting and vile, they still have human rights.

You can’t stop people from accessing a GP because you don’t like their beliefs, so why do you think you can do it when it comes to those trying to save their lives and fleeing wars and persecution?

Also beliefs are not set in stone. They change all the time.

People have a right to an education. They have a right to food. They have a right to healthcare. I would also say they have a right to asylum. I know we’re living in a time when this is unfashionable to say. With Brexit, so many hate anyone who doesn’t look like them. They want everybody out. Even if they’re doctors who are saving your life, they are still not good enough, not white enough, or what have you.

I think this boils down to a very fundamental issue. Rights are for everyone not just your pals. And there is more that hold us together than separate us if only we could see beyond the propaganda.

We are seeing some concerns from many people being raised both in North America, Europe, and elsewhere with, the phrase being used is, “right wing nationalism,” which can sometimes be seen as ethnic nationalism in a way.

What do you think is the state of that at this point in time? What are the possible major concerns associated with that?

I think this is what happens when identity politics rules.

Identity politics divides and separates people so that they can no longer see their commonalities across these false borders. It’s not just that minorities love to live in ghettos and be humiliated day-in and day-out.

This gettoisation is part and parcel of government policies of multiculturalism and cultural relativism. It means that governments can manage their minorities on the cheap by outsourcing citizens to self-appointed community “leaders” and Sharia courts, Islamic schools and so on.

When identity politics is supreme, it makes it possible for white identity politics to be portrayed as a legitimate option.

It surprises me how many people justify and legitimize what is fundamentally white identity politics, white supremacist politics, because the fascists and bigots happen to be critical of Islam.

Look, the Islamists are also critical of US militarism but that doesn’t mean I should be siding with them. You can oppose both. This is a trap, though, the so-called “Regressive Left” fall into. But so do those who use the term “Regressive Left” in every other sentence but consider it a “smear” to call out those feeding into the far-Right narrative.

Like the atheists and secularists who fall into the trap of defending Tommy Robinson and Robert Spencer because they have “some legitimate views.”  Well, I’m sure if you sit down and have a chat with al-Baghdadi, he will have “some legitimate views.”

Assad or Khamenei might too; they might think that roads should be paved.

But that’s not a reason to ally with them or to justify their politics. I think this is a huge problem. You have people saying, “Well, the Far Right is dealing with the Islamists, therefore, let’s deal with them with kid gloves.”

I think that’s a mistake. If you look at them (I always get shit for saying this but people don’t understand what I’m saying) fundamentally they are similar to the Islamists. Islamism is a far-Right movement.

Of course, I’m not saying Tommy Robinson decapitates people, but movements can be fundamentally similar yet based on the amount of power or access to power they have, they might not necessarily be able to wreck the same havoc as one that has state power and backing.

Fundamentally, though, their politics is one of hate, placing collective blame, regression. It’s unfortunate that so many people who consider themselves freethinkers would side with them.
You mentioned Sharia courts as well as Islamic schools.

I know this is a bit of an issue in the United Kingdom. For instance, private religious schools for youngsters, for kids. Kids are told things that at times are outright wrong, especially even facts and fundamental theories, principles, and laws about the natural world.

For instance, creationism over evolutionary theory and so on. What are your own personal concerns with some of these institutions and the way they being implemented within the United Kingdom?

I think “faith schools” is an oxymoron. Schools and faith don’t go together. Unless, you’re talking about indoctrination. I know there are some Church of England schools that are not indoctrinating the way Islamic schools are. They used to do it and still they promote ideas that are antithetical to free thinking and education. I think, in a sense, the educational system is one of the only ways in which we can protect children from their families.

It is meant to be a way in which the playing field is leveled for all kids irrespective of background. You’re rich. You’re poor. Your family beats you. Your family tries to veil you. Schools should be a place where you’re safeguarded.

You get to hear different ideas. You get the protection you might not get at home. You get to be equal to other kids. Faith schools are antithetical to this. If you question, you are punished. If you raise dissent or you don’t agree, or you ask how certain religious edicts could possibly be true, you’re penalized for it.

Education should promote and encourage questioning, inquiry, and free thought. It makes no sense to have religious schools. It’s a prescription for disaster. We’re faced with that disaster today. I can’t understand how it’s ever seen to be good idea.

Historically religion was in charge of education; faith schools are a remnant of the time when religion played a central role in the state and society. And of course even today, religion holds a privileged place in society.

The British government, for example, is not a secular state by any means. This is a state in which the Church of England has real power. They’ve got bishops in the House of Lords. The Queen is the head of the church. You’ve got prayers in Parliament.

When speaking about faith schools (even the term seems innocuous, though it’s so sinister), it is not enough to address non-discrimination in admission policies or hiring practices but about why it is bad for our children. Fundamentally, there shouldn’t be any faith schools whatsoever, whether it’s stated funded or private.

What about Sharia courts existing alongside mainstream court systems?

I can’t understand that either. If you look at Sharia courts in Britain, they are dealing only in family matters, e.g. divorce, child custody, domestic violence, and so on and so forth. Family matters are not trivial matters as it’s often portrayed.

They are not matters of the community. They are human rights issues. In many countries, where Sharia rules apply, this is one of the main areas of fight back by women’s rights campaigners because of the huge amounts of discrimination against women.

For it to be sold to us here as a choice and a right is like selling FGM as a choice and right. The courts hold women’s testimony to be half that of a man’s. Women don’t have unilateral right to divorce. Men do.

The rules are discriminatory and legitimize violence against women. For example, you’ve got one Sharia judge saying that there’s no such thing as marital rape because women should expect to have sex within marriage.

And that calling it rape is the act of aggression and not the actual rape. Or they have said if only we’ve had one amputation or stoning in Britain, there would be fewer thieves and less adultery, look how great Saudi Arabia is.

These are the judges making rulings in these courts and making decisions on women’s lives. They’ve been recorded saying,

“You’ve been beaten by your husband. Have you asked why he’s beating you? Is it because of your cooking? Is it because of you going out with your friends?”

It is outrageous. It is a scandal that they should be allowed. I think one of the things we’re seeing is not only are the rules discriminatory, but the process itself is tantamount to abuse. That is the argument women’s rights groups are making.

No matter what a woman’s background, a man’s background, or a child’s background, they are citizens first and foremost. They have rights. To relegate minority women to kangaroo courts, that are violating their rights should be considered a human rights scandal.

In international studies done by UN organs, or bodies, one of the major, probably the best, ways of improving the well being and livelihood of an entire society, from economics to child and maternal mortality rates (reduction) in addition to increasing access and achievements in education, is under the guise of the empowerment of women.

When individuals such as others and yourself are campaigning and fighting for women’s rights, and looking for ways, politically and otherwise, to empower women, it is actually improving the lives, on average, of everyone in the region or the society.

What do you think should be or is the best means through which to implement women’s rights in cases that are very difficult?

Where women have less of a vote or no vote, they have a lot of pressure not to speak up for their own rights.

I think one of the key ways, of course, is defending secularism. One of the problems is that secularism has become a dirty word. We hear how secular extremists are compared with religious extremists. I’m sorry. No. There’s absolutely no comparison.

The French government saying there should be no conspicuous religious symbols in schools is actually a protection of school children.

Why should a child be veiled because their parents are Muslims?

Don’t we agree that children have the right to decide their political leaning and positions when they reach of age, why not also their beliefs?

Why is it okay for religion to be imposed?

In that sense, compare that with acid being thrown in your face for going to school, compare that with compulsory veiling from the age of puberty, compare that with gender segregation, there’s absolutely no comparison between what a secular state wants and what a theocracy wants.

We should unashamedly, unconditionally promote secularism. It is one the main preconditions for women’s empowerment and rights.

I think particularly when religion has any say in the state or law it is detrimental to women’s rights.

That is one precondition. Equality before the law is key, but equality on a social and economic level are also key. That comes down to a system that puts profit before human need and human welfare. Religion is useful for that system as well.
It helps to keep women down.

Who are some personal heroes for you?

My parents are my personal heroes because the more I actually see how many young people have been abused and destroyed by their parents, it does make me realise how lucky I am to have the father that I have and my mum as well.

Also, the person who most has affected the way I think is the Iranian Marxist Mansoor Hekmat. Unfortunately, he died at 51, but his politics which centered on the human being has influenced my politics and the politics of many from Iran, the region, and Diaspora.

Do you have any recommended novels or more academic writings for people with an interest in or leaning in getting involved in these issues?

There is Mansoor Hekmat’s Collected Works of which there is one translated into English. I would recommend that to anyone who wants to know more about Iranian politics but also about how to address everything from Islam, Islamism, veiling, secularism from a fundamentally human and Left perspective.

Anything written by Algerian sociologist Marieme Helie Lucas is a great read. There are two interviews with her on the veil and gender segregation, which are brilliant.

I’d recommend reading Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis for a view of the Iranian revolution (which was not Islamic) and its expropriation by the Islamist movement; Mona Eltahawy’s Headscarves and Hymens on the veil as well as Karima Bennoune’s You Fatwa Does Not Apply

Here on people’s resistance against Islamism. Elham Manea’s Women and Sharia Law is also a really good book on legal pluralism in the UK.

For getting in contact with you, people can go to your Twitter and website.

I have a really good website now thanks to a really wonderful volunteer. My website was hideous before. It was embarrassing to refer people to it. It is www.maryamnamazie.com. Via the website, people can read things I’ve written, see videos, and media coverage.

Also, there’s a TV program that is broadcast in Iran, which I do weekly with a co-host of mine. It is called Bread and Roses. It is Persian and English. It uses illegal satellite dishes to get into Iran.

Many people have satellite dishes in Iran.
It just deals with free thinking, taboo breaking issues. There’s always an interview. We’ve interviewed some of the greats as well as people who should be considered great by all free thinkers, but aren’t as well known, unfortunately.

One of the things the program shows is that there’s so many atheists, secularists, and free thinkers in the so-called Muslim world. I mean, it is important to see them, recognise them, because once we do it breaks this whole idea that dissent and free thought are Western concepts, which is nonsense.

That, in fact, there are lots of people fighting for the very same issues that people fight for here it home in Britain.

Also good organisations to support are the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain and One Law for All.

Any feelings or thoughts in conclusion about the things we’ve discussed?

Sometimes, when we’re having these discussions, people only see homogenous groups; they make decisions based on group identity. But group identity is very often imposed. It fails to recognise that there are so many individuals within those groups who are individuals, courageous and are resisting in many different ways – often at great risk to themselves.

If we can start seeing each other as people and recognising that there is a lot more which brings us together than separates us, I think we would have a real chance of pushing the Islamist and far-Right back.

One of the reasons that the Islamists are so violent is because they see this immense dissent. Unfortunately, it is not recognised in the West because it is either Islamophobic to criticise or you’ve got the Far-Right trying to hijack the criticism in order to scapegoat and vilify Muslims and migrants and push forward their own white identity politics.

It is important for us to go back to basics of universal rights, citizenship, secularism, and join hands together around political ideals and not identities. It is this united solidarity as human beings that has helped us overcome inhumanity in the past and can also help us today.

Islam’s Non-Believers

Added October 24, 2016

A new film by Deeyah Khan, above – Islam’s Non-Believers –  follows the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain, which supports ex-Muslims, often referred to as apostates or unbelievers, both in the UK and abroad.

The documentary – which can be seen here – provides an important insight into the hidden plight of young people in Britain, many of whom are leading double lives – pretending to still be Muslims including by wearing the veil or attending mosque – in order to avoid ostracisation, abuse and even violence.

Depression, self-harm, and suicide are some of the effects.

According to Sadia, one of the ex-Muslims featured in the film said:

I remember saying to my mum, ‘I don’t think I believe in God anymore,’ And her saying, ‘You can’t tell anybody else because they’ll kill you, we are obliged to kill ex-Muslims,’ and that it would put me at extreme risk if anybody else was to find out, so that conversation ended there.

Given the stigma and risks, it’s hard to know how many ex-Muslims there are in Britain, and internationally, but it’s a growing phenomenon.

The Internet is doing to Islam what the printing press did in the past to Christianity. Social media has not only given countless young people access to “forbidden” ideas and allowed them a space to express themselves where none existed – but it has also helped them find each other, share their stories and see that they are not alone.

This has brought with it courage and hope for the right to live as they choose. It’s become a global resistance movement.
maryam-fusse

There are literally millions of us – in every home and “Muslim” family, on every street corner, in every city, town and village across Britain and the globe.

Atheism is ‘breaking like a tsunami’, says a worried official of the Islamic regime of Iran.

The “threat” of atheism explains why the Saudi government has equated atheism with terrorism and Egypt’s youth ministry has joined with the highest Sunni authority, Al-Azhar, to combat “extremism and atheism”.

Atheism is punishable with the death penalty in 13 countries and a prosecutable offence in many more, including via fines, imprisonment, flogging, and exclusion from civil rights, such as losing child custody.

And it is not just “over there” that apostates face persecution but right here in Britain with Imams and respected mainstream “community leaders” legitimising discrimination and/or inciting violence.

In the film, Omer El-Hamdoon, President of the Muslim Association of Britain, justifies ostracisation by saying that Islam’s non-believers are “outside the human norms”:

How we treat people is the same; we don’t discriminate but our love cannot be the same, it’s just human behaviour. Islam is a pragmatic religion, it doesn’t expect people to behave outside the human norms.

[When asked on his position with regards the death penalty for apostasy in an ideal Islamic state, he refused to respond in usual double-speak.]

Shah Sadruddin, another “community leader”, is shown calling for the death of a Bangladeshi atheist blogger:

This son of a bastard is challenging us.

O Bangla’s Scholars, O Bangla’s Muslims, wake up! No son of a bastard will remain alive after swearing at my Prophet!

Sadruddin is a teacher/rector at an Islamic academy and madrasah and ran as a Conservative councillor and lost. In a clip for the Conservatives, he says:

I believe in equality, I believe in fairness, I believe in loving the human race and I hate to hate anybody.

rehana

Rayhana Sultan, above left, a young ex-Muslim from Bangladesh, says this form of hate speech can further intimidate ex-Muslims, forcing them back into the closet:

These kind of lectures create an environment that subconsciously teaches devout Muslims to see ex-Muslims or anyone who thinks out of the box as a threat, further ostracising them, de-humanising them, bullying them, so it further creates so much dangers for people to come out as an ex-Muslim.

Whilst apostasy is not criminalised here in Britain, many imams and self-appointed “community leaders” have created a climate where vilification and incitement to violence are permissible, particularly since there is no political will to recognise it as incitement.

Add to this, links to the transnational Islamist movement, British government appeasement of the Islamist movement, multiculturalism as a social policy which homogenises the “Muslim community” and fails to recognise dissent as well as accusations of “Islamophobia” to silence critics and you have a situation where young people born and raised in this country have neither the right nor the choice to think or live as they want.

Identity politics is literally killing us.

Deeyah Khan’s film is often hard to watch – parts of it are heart-breaking – but it also inspires and brings hope by highlighting those challenging apostasy laws and stigma and calling for equality – much like the gay liberation movement has done in decades past.

Clearly, the ex-Muslim movement deserves the support and solidarity of all those more interested in defending human rights and lives rather than religion and the religious-Right.

‘Twisted’ Muslim school needs cash to appeal closure order

Added October 23, 2016

The Jamia al-Hudaa Residential College in Nottingham is trying to raise £200,000 to fight a decision by the Department of Education to close its boarding facilities.

According to this report, the school will remain open while an appeal takes place.

The school’s principal Raza Ul Haq, above, said:

We feel that we are fulfilling all the standards. We are a charity and we made the decision to appeal after consulting our community.

We are always fundraising and the mood in the school is that we are going to work hard to overcome this.

The independent fee-paying girls’ school in Berkeley Avenue, Mapperley Park, was told by the Department for Education that it was no longer allowed to admit new pupils and must close its boarding allocation over fears of “extremism” and “twisted ideologies” in the classroom.

The school which has 252 pupils on roll, with 171 of those named as boarders, started the appeal process on Wednesday.

The school’s Just Giving page has raised nearly £1,000 on top of the £40,000 staff say they have already received. The page says of the school:

It is a place that’s dear to a lot of people’s hearts where they have been given the opportunity to study at this beautiful place.

The majority of the pupils pay up to £3,500 a year to study at the school.

Although it is an independent school the Government ordered Ofsted to inspect the school, which is part of the Madni Trust – a registered charity at the same address.

Concerns were first raised in April 2015 when the school was judged to be inadequate. At that time, 15 of the independent school standards and 10 of the national minimum standards for boarding schools were not met. A follow-up unannounced inspection has revealed that standards had still not been met.

Her Majesty’s Inspector Deirdre Duignan released a report following the visit in April. She said:

Inspectors found that the school does not promote balanced views. Pupils can access books in the library that have been written by controversial authors, for example by one who is not allowed to enter this country.

Leaders were not able to say how these books supported the school’s curriculum, or how pupils who accessed such books would be helped to understand a different point of view.

Staff do not have a clear understanding of the specific risks that girls at this school may be vulnerable to, for example female genital mutilation. Some members of staff have gaps in their employment history that have not been checked.

Inspectors also found that training for staff is not up to date, there were “widespread” problems with bullying,

school-630x425

Former pupil Aliyah Saleem, above, was expelled from the school in 2006 for having a disposable camera and recently spoke out about the school.

The 27-year-old, now living in London, said:

The school has the right to appeal. In my view they have shown that they are incompetent and do not offer a balanced education. I hope that the Department for Education ensures the protection of pupils.

The school said that cameras are banned and that Saleem was “sent home”.

The Department for Education said that the length of an appeal process varies from case to case.

In reference to the school a spokesman added:

Extremism has no place in our society and when we find schools promoting twisted ideologies or discrimination in classrooms, we will take action, up to and including closing the school or working with the police as necessary.

SWEDISH humanists ANNOUNCES religious propaganda

Added IOctober 22, 2016

On October 27, Lawrence M. Krauss makes a brief visit in Stockholm to discuss science and religion with Roland Poirier Martinsson.

Are science and religion compatible? Is it possible to reconcile religion and science, or is the conflict between these spheres irreconcilable?

WHAT CONTRIBUTES WITH RELIGION, or is it that science is enough?

Lawrence M. Krauss is Professor of Physics and author of the book A universe out of nothing.
He was a sidekick with Richard Dawkins in the acclaimed documentary The Unbelievers, which received the title of Swedish science stars.

Roland Poirier Martinsson is author, commentator and a doctor of philosophy. He is the editor of Timbro and Catholic.

Dear humanists:

And you should pay (!) To hear what has been a Catholic -i Sweden - to say about religion and science?

Do you know that Ingemar Hedenius, Bertrand Russell and several others answered that question long ago?

Or is it a tactic to spread the Catholic thought in Sweden?

Anti abortion

Added October 21, 2016

Former Portuguese prime minister Antonio Guterres, nominated Thursday to be the next UN secretary-general.

His detractors blame him for contributing to the victory of the "no" side in a 1998 referendum on a proposal to liberalise Portugal's strict law against abortion.

Guterres allowed the referendum but publicly opposed the law being changed.

Islamic girls boarding school could be forced to close

Added October 20, 2016

Aliyah Saleem, above, who was expelled from  the Jamia Al Hudaa girls’ school in Nottingham in 2006, says she believes that action taken against the school by education watchdog Ofsted does not go far enough.

The school, according to this report, has been instructed to close its boarding facilities after an Ofsted inspection found there was “inadequacies” in safeguarding the pupils, which included poorly trained staff and a culture of bullying.

Since 85 per cent of the school’s pupils are boarders, it will effectively be forced to close. Parents were given until today, October 18, to remove their daughters from the school.

Saleem, now 27, wrote in a blog post that she did not think the schools watchdog had done enough.

There is still much to be done in regards to this school and all independent schools which have the power to immensely limit the curriculum taught.

I believe that children who attend such schools deserve so much more from the government, and an apology would be a good place to start.

The management at this school are not only incompetent, but at times were utterly cruel when I was a student there. We are yet to understand the full scale of successive government’s failures to monitor independent schools rigorously.

Opened in 1996, Jamia Al Hudaa has around 200 boarders and is run on fundamentalist Deobandi lines. This year only 25 per cent of its pupils achieved five A*-C GCSE grades, compared to the national average of 53 per cent.

The school taught pupils that, according ro sharia laws, men could beat women and gay people should be killed.

Saleem was expelled after she was accused of “narcissism” for owning a disposable camera, and publicly humiliated as a part of her punishment.

Following her expulsion, Saleem spoke out about her treatment at the school, saying that pupils were taught no geography, history, art, sport or music, but were instead subject to extremist views.

Students were taught that the death sentence could be given to gay men and that Jews and Christians made Allah angry.

Speaking to The Times under a pseudonym in 2014, she spoke of how she was made to feel isolated and shut off from society – visits into town being banned unless it was to see a doctor or dentist.

She said she left school feeling anti-Semitic and unable to live within British society.

Saleem is an ex-Muslim atheist who left Islam at 19. She has since spoken about ex-Muslim issues as well as advocating for secular education. She is the co-founder of Faith to Faithless, an organisation that raises awareness of the discrimination and prejudiced faced by people who leave religion.

The Ofsted inspection confirmed the school does not promote “British values” and allows pupils to access controversial literature by authors who have been barred from entering the UK.

Russia’s Chief Wizard Patriarch Kirill renews war on women

Added October 17, 2016

Just before his departure for London, where he is currently cuddling up to the Church of England and other religious bodies, Vladimir Mikhailovich Gundyayev, better known as Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia, signed an appeal to introduce a total nationwide ban on abortions in Russia.

According to Father Alexander Volkov, the appeal calls for recognition of the beginning of human life at the moment of conception and stresses that the embryo should be legally protected. The document also proposes to ban any surgical or therapeutic interruption of pregnancy, as well as “the use of contraceptives with abortion-inducing effects.”

Russian pro-life activists say that about 1 million women in Russia have induced abortions every year.

Back in 2013, Kirill spelled out the dangers of feminism, warning that it was a “very dangerous” phenomenon that could lead to the destruction of Russia.

Man has his gaze turned outward – he must work, make money – and woman must be focused inwards, where her children are, where her home is. If this incredibly important function of women is destroyed then everything will be destroyed – the family and, if you wish, the motherland.

He said he was not opposed to women pursuing careers in politics or business or other professions “that today are mainly done by men”, but said they should get their priorities straight.
He also said that it was “no accident” that most feminist leaders were unmarried.

I noticed this when I worked in Geneva, at the World Council of Churches, when the feminist theme was just starting to develop.

Sexism runs rampant in Russia and women’s rights appear nowhere on the political agenda. Putin has made boosting Russia’s low birth rate a key platform of his administration, often cheering women’s role as mothers.

Then in January this year, Kirill partially blamed an increased acceptance of homosexuality for the rise of Islamic State.

The imbecile claimed he was not surprised that some Muslims were flocking to Isis’ quasi-religious state as a way of escaping the “godless civilization” that celebrates events such as Gay Pride.

In an interview published on the Church’s official website, Kirill said:

[Isis] is creating a civilisation that is new by comparison to the established one that is godless, secular and even radical in its secularism.

Kirill landed in the UK today. Russian Orthodox Church spokesman Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, above, centre, said:

I believe that the visit of His Holiness’s  meetings with believers and representatives of the Church of England and the general public will help our peoples strengthen mutual trust.

Kirills visit marks the 300th anniversary of the Russian Orthodox Church in the British Isles and is the first visit by a Russian patriarch to the country.

Hilarion said:

Relations between Russia and the United Kingdom have been going through difficult times over recent years. However, history knows periods of cooperation between the two countries, for example during World War II. The past and the present encourage us to promote a closer rapprochement between Russian and British people.

Regarding the relationship between the Russian church and the Church of England, Hilarion stressed that the two Christian churches have had close ties since the 16th century and shared particularly good relations in the latter half of the 20th century.

Violent protests scupper an atheist convention in India

Adedded October 16, 2016

A two-day atheism convention that was to commence in Mathura yesterday was called off after violent protests by local religious leaders and the public.

The conference had been organised by Swami Balendu, above, a former Hindu preacher and spiritual guru who became an atheist.

Confirming the cancellation of the convention at Balendu’s ashram in Mathura, Alok Priyadarshi said that since local residents and religious leaders were protesting, the organiser called it off and gave an assurance that no conferences that hurt religious feelings would be held in the town again.

Accusing Balendu of spreading “anti-religion” feelings, residents shouted slogans at the venue of the convention and indulged in stone pelting. However, no one was injured in the incident.
In this report, Balendu is quoted as saying:

Over 50 activists of the VHP, the Bajrang Dal and local Hindutva groups reached the Bindu Seva Sansathan Ashram at about 10 in the morning and started shouting slogans and attacking the ashram property. Armed with sticks, the Hindutva activists broke the glass panels of the ashram belongings.

The protestors also burnt an effigy of Balendu and accused him of spreading lies adharam (immorality).

Balendu had accused religious leaders of fooling people in the name of God. He had identified religion as a “business” that thrives on fear in the minds of people and said all religious scriptures are “fictitious”and meant only for entertainment.
In an interview in 2015, the “atheist guru” said:

We need to spread rational thinking and teach our children how to think, not what to think! Only through that can we save future generations from exploitation based on superstition and religion. That’s what it really is about, stopping exploitation and saving people from being cheated.

My fight is actually against poverty and exploitation. God and religion just came in between.

After he ditched religion Balendu embarked on a career of teaching  yoga, and people from all over the world came to learn from him.
We now provide relaxing courses, training, retreats and holidays with yoga and ayurveda at our ashram in Vrindavan.

We focus on physical exercise, oils and nutrition. We even offer Ayurvedic cooking classes, and all this without making false claims of curing cancer etc as some yoga gurus do. People come from all over the world and love getting this experience without the danger of being brainwashed by religious and spiritual gurus.

Youth pastor, 35, arrested over fifteen-year-old’s pregnancy

Added October 15, 2016

Wesley Blackburn, above, a Pennsylvania pastor and father of five, has been charged with hundreds of counts of statutory sexual assault and indecent assault following his arrest in connection with the pregnancy of a teenage girl from his youth group.

According to this report, Blackburn was a youth pastor at Faith Brethren Bible Church in New Paris.

His wife told the New Paris church’s head pastor that he had confessed to the seven-months-long relationship and asked for a divorce,
Senior pastor Jim Espenshade  and other church leaders immediately fired Blackburn and alerted police last week.

Espenshade said:

I don’t know this man. The man that got arrested, I don’t know him. I was shocked, absolutely shocked. You work with him and you’re there and you’re thinking, ‘How could this happen? How could he do this?’

Blackburn told a state trooper who found him packing his belongings at the church that he started having sex with the girl in March.
Blackburn, who also served as a Sunday school teacher, had met the girl during his first year at the church in 2009, according to the court documents. She had been in his youth group for seventh and eighth graders since 2014, the documents showed.

Investigators said Blackburn refused to discuss the matter with Espenshade and the deacons who decided to sack him immediately.
Meanwhile, it is reported from New Castle, Indiana, that a pastor was arrested after he allegedly threatened several kids with a gun when they rode their bikes by his Calvary Baptist Church.

According to court documents, two children, a brother and a sister, were riding their bikes to Baker Park. They passed by Calvary Baptist Church, and that’s when a man, later identified as the church’s pastor Bobby Slagle, 69, told them to “get off his property or he would shoot them”.

The children told police that Slagle proceeded to lift up his shirt and show them he had a gun lodged in his waistband.
When the officers asked him about the incident, he said he was frustrated about vandalism at the church. He also showed the officers his gun by raising his shirt.

Slagle said he had a lifetime carry permit and told officers “it was his right to tell the kids” what he’d told them.

Later Henry County Prosecutor’s Office made the decision to charge Slagle with intimidation.
Officers arrested Slagle at the church. As they tried to handcuff him, he “tensed up” and began to struggle with them. Slagle was also charged with resisting arrest.

Police said Slagle’s gun contained “four live rounds” of ammunition when they took him into custody.

One Girl Under 15 Married Every Seven Seconds

Added October 13, 2016

One girl under 15 is married every seven seconds, according to new analysis by Save the Children that reveals the scale of the threat posed by child marriage to education, health and children’s safety.

Girls as young as 10 are marrying – to much older men - in countries like Afghanistan, Yemen, India and Somalia.

A new report released today by Save the Children, Every Last Girl: Free to live, free to learn, free from harm, has ranked countries in an index from the best to worst country in which to be a girl, based on child marriage, schooling, teen pregnancy, maternal deaths and number of female representatives in national government.

Countries at the bottom of the index include Niger, Chad, Central African Republic, Mali and Somalia, many of which have high rates of child marriage. Countries at the top include Sweden, Finland, Norway, Netherlands and Belgium.

“Child marriage starts a cycle of disadvantage that denies girls the opportunity to learn, develop and be children.” said Carolyn Miles, President & CEO of Save the Children.

“Girls who marry too early often can’t attend school, and are more likely to face domestic violence, abuse and rape. They get pregnant and bear children before they’re physically and emotionally ready, which can have devastating consequences on their and their baby’s health.”

The international community has pledged to end child marriage by 2030, but if current trends continue, the total number of women married in childhood will grow from more than 700 million today to around 950 million by 2030, and to 1.2 billion by 2050.

The report also reveals:

“The wedding day, I was imagining it would be a great day, but it wasn’t. It was all misery. It was full of sadness. Many girls who get married at a young age get illnesses and suffer from bleeding. Thank God it didn’t happen to me.,” said Sahar*.

“I feel really blessed that I am having a baby. But I am a child raising a child.”

Save the Children runs a range of programs that support the most disadvantaged girls around the world. It is calling on governments and donors to invest in girls’ education and life chances, to help bring an end to child marriage and gender discrimination.

Save the Children is releasing the report ahead of International Day of the Girl on Oct. 11,a day dedicated to highlighting the barriers girls face globally and to empowering girls to reach their full potential.

Notes to editors:

The full report can be accessed here: www.savethechildren.org/girls-report
*Sahar’s real name has been changed to protect her identity.

Child marriage rates: these are 2015 estimates produced by the UN for girls under 15 by asking women aged 20-24 if they were married before that age. The figures are therefore for young women who were married and under 15 before 2010. The ‘one girl married every seven seconds’ statistic is calculated by applying the 2015 global child marriage rate to global population figures, calculating the average number of marriages per year, and dividing the number of seconds in a year by the number of marriages per year. This differs from the statistic for girls under 18, which is one marriage every two seconds. Our index uses the statistic for child marriage under 18. We assume marriages are evenly distributed by age group.

Estimates of future trends: according to the United Nations Children’s Fund, the total number of women married in childhood will grow from more than 700 million today to around 950 million by 2030. By 2050 this number would reach 1.2 billion. See UNICEF (2014) Ending Child Marriage: Progress and Prospects
Lebanon: According to UNHCR data, more than 6 percent of Syrian girls aged between 12 and 17 in Lebanon are married.
India: As of 2006 (the latest year for which data on early marriage is available), 24.6 million females aged 20-24 were married before the age of 18 in India.

Save the Children invests in childhood — every day, in times of crisis and for our future. In the United States and around the world, we give children a healthy start, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

There’s an awful lot of oil in Oklahoma, so let’s thank God

Added September 12, 2016

Oklahoma’s Republican Governor Mary Fallin, above, has officially designated October 13th as a day of prayer for the oil industry.

Oilfield Prayer Day is the brainchild of Reverend Tom Beddow, who, as the head of Oklahoma’s Oil Patch Chaplains, travels around the state to provide ministry to employees in the oil industry.

He hopes that churches across the state will open their doors and that Christians will flood the pews to ask God to strengthen the oil industry.

Fallin heartily agreed with the concept, made an official proclamation for the day, and plans to attend a special prayer breakfast in Oklahoma City on Thursday morning.

In her official proclamation, Fallin notes that Oklahoma is “blessed” with a large amount of oil and gas, adding that:oil

Christians acknowledge such natural resources are created by God.

Because of all that fossil fuels do for the state, Fallin says:

Christians are invited to thank God for the blessings created by the oil and natural gas industry and to seek His wisdom and ask for protection.

Writing for Patheos, Michael Stone said:

There is something profoundly perverse about Gov Mary Fallin asking citizens of Oklahoma to pray for the oil and natural gas industry, instead of, say, the homeless, or kids with cancer, or those suffering from war, famine, and oppression around the globe.

Yet perhaps more important, there is something deeply distasteful about Fallin using her authority as Governor to promote her particularly perverse and crass vision of Christianity. At the very least, her sectarian call for prayers is an insult to the US Constitution, and the secular values upon which this nation was founded.

And Nation of Change’s Ruth Milka wrote:

Oklahoma’s wealthiest person, Harold Hamm, made much of his $15 billion fortune from shale oil fracking, the same oil extraction method responsible for at least 90% of the earthquakes in Oklahoma.

This is the same Harold Hamm that Donald Trump is considering for his energy secretary.

And what about George Kaiser? Here’s another oil billionaire of Oklahoma, whose family foundation’s bad investments will leave taxpayers on the hook for $535 million in federal loans, and who has built his fortune in part by utilizing tax loopholes.

This whole farce is a disturbing example of the power the 1% wields over politics in America. The oil companies, to ensure their survival, have recruited church and community leaders to fill the heads of their followers with nonsense, connecting their religion with a greedy, corrupt industry which wants nothing more than to protect profit.

Perhaps it would be more prudent for Gov Mary Fallin and the Republican-dominated legislature to stop praying to the oil industry and start passing laws to make their state’s oil billionaires pay their fair share of taxes.

A 13-Year-Old Follower of Jainism is Dead After Fasting for 68 Straight Days

Added October 11, 2016
by

While the religion of Jainism has a reputation for being non-violent and generally harmless, I can tell you from experience (former Jain here) there are serious problems with their beliefs. It’s not just the belief in supernatural ideas like reincarnation and karma, there’s also pressure to fast on the high holy days. It’s not just for a day, either. Sometimes, the fasts last more than a week. (Pre-boiled water is allowed.)

My sister did that when she was in middle school — and seeing people close to me celebrating that unhealthy, dangerous decision was part of what drove me away from the faith. My mother still fasts — or eats just once a day — throughout the year, as do many of our family friends.

So while I can’t confirm this story coming out of Hyderabad, India, and while it seems absurd even by Jain standards, it’s not entirely out of left field.

FastingDeath

A 13-year-old girl in Hyderabad died last week after fasting for 68 days as per Jain rituals during the holy period of ‘Chaumasa‘.

Aradhana, a class 8 student, was was admitted to the hospital just two days after completing her fast where she died of cardiac arrest, the family said.

The story says she had successfully completed a 41-day fast earlier in her life… though success is likely defined as nothing more than “she didn’t die.” What the lengthy fast did to her body is anyone’s guess.

At least legal action is a possibility:

Child rights activist Shanta Sinha says a police case must be registered and the child rights commission must take action.

A minor is not deemed to have a voluntary will to take decisions that can endanger their life. Religious leaders also need to re-look at what should be allowed and what is not,” she said.

A punishment for the parents may be what we need to stop this lunacy in the future.

Apostases deserve to be assasined

Added October 9

The booklet bears the name of Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani, above, imam at the mosque, and says “any Muslim should kill” those who insult the Prophet Mohammed.

It points to a classical manual of Islamic law to justify killings without waiting for court judgments and says apostates:

Deserve to be assassinated.

The booklet discusses the case of Mumtaz Qadri, a fanatic who murdered a governor in Pakistan in 2011 because of his support for liberal reforms to the country’s strict Islamic laws.

It says “all Muslims should support” Qadri.

Man faces jail for pulling the plug on Buddhist broadcast

Added October 8, 2016

Dutch citizen Klaas Haytema, 30, above, is awaiting trial on a charge of insulting religion by disconnecting an amplifier broadcasting a late-night sermon from a Buddhist hall in the tourist city of Mandalay in northern Myanmar.

Haytema, according to this report, silenced the amplifier because:

I wanted to sleep desperately. I couldn’t stand the noise. I am really sorry and I really apologise.

The man who was reciting the sermon pressed charges against Haytema for insulting the Buddhism.

A local legal officer decided that the alleged offence was serious enough to warrant a criminal trial. The offence carries a two-year jail sentence.

In a further blow to Haytema, immigration officials have also charged him with violating the terms of his visa.

Local immigration department head Thaung Dan said that Haytema had breached two provisions in the visa: that visitors should follow the existing laws of Myanmar, as well as the customs of Myanmar.

If someone applies for a visa to enter Myanmar, they have to follow the rules and regulations laid out in the visa.

Mandalay is an especially culturally and religiously conservative region.

A while back, New Zealander Philip Blackwood,  and two colleagues were sentenced to two and a half years in prison after a picture of Buddha was posted on Facebook.

An online flyer promoting Blackwood’s VGastro bar and restaurant included a “psychedelic” depiction of Buddha wearing headphones and was used in 2014 to promote cheap drinks at the venue. Blackwood was released on amnesty 10 months into his sentence.

In July, a Spanish tourist was reportedly kicked out of Myanmar after monks in the ancient town of Bagan took offence over an exposed Buddha tattoo on one of his legs.

Meanwhile, it is reported here that nine Australians were arrested for stripping down to brief swimwear at the Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix.

The group, branded the “Budgie Nine”, were charged with public nuisance, which carries a fine but no jail time.

The men were detained after posing in swimwear decorated with the Malaysian flag to celebrate Australian Daniel Ricciardo’s win in Sunday’s race.

In a letter read out in court, they apologised and expressed their “deepest regret”.

Added Octo0ber 7, 2016

In a video just released by Associated Press, Mubeen Rajhu, above, claims he was goaded by work colleagues into killing his 18-year-old sister, Tasleem.

According to this report, in August, Rajhu walked into the kitchen of his family’s home carrying a pistol and, with his mother and another sister looking on, raised the gun and fired a single shot into his sister Tasleem’s head.

In the AP video, recorded in a jailhouse in Lahore, Rajhu said:

I could not let it go. It was all I could think about. I had to kill her. There was no choice. There was no yelling, no shouting. I just shot her dead.

He explained that he had been “bullied” into committing the murder by co-workers at the steel mill at which he was employed. They would to mock Rajhu, telling him that it was unacceptable that his sister was keeping company with a Christian.

Ali Raza, one of Rajhu’s co-workers, laughed about how easy it was to get Rajhu riled up.

He used to tell us, ‘If you don’t stop, I will kill myself. Stop!’ The guys here told him, ‘It would be better to kill your sister.’

Rajhu purchased a gun and six days later killed Tasleem. He claims his sister had it coming. He told her on numerous occasions that she was bringing dishonour to the family by fraternising with a Christian.

Moreover, he made her swear on the Koran that she would never marry the Christian man. Tasleem swore that she wouldn’t marry him, but went ahead anyway, despite the fact that he warned her that he would not be able to show his face at the mill.

Shockingly, Rajhu’s father, said to “shattered” by the killing, is blaming his daughter.

My family is destroyed. Everything is destroyed only because of this shameful girl. Even after death I am destroyed because of her.

Others in the poor neighborhood along a section of northern Lahore sympathise with the father – and lionise Rajhu.

Babar Ali, a neighbor, said:

I am proud of this man. He has done the right thing to kill her. When the news spreads, they will praise this man.

“Honour killings” have been on the rise in Pakistan and women are victims, by far, more than men.

In 2015, the number of honor killings rose for the third straight year with 1,184 killed. Of that total, 1,096 of the victims were women.

The problem has become such an epidemic that lawmakers have passed bills that would close the loophole in murder laws that often allow suspects in “honour killings” to go scot-free.

Under the proposed law, perpetrators – even if forgiven by family members – would still have to serve a minimum sentence of 12-and-a-half years.

Lengthy jail sentence imposed on Australian Catholic priest

Added October 5, 2016

Robert Patrick Claffey, 73, who sexually abused 12 Victorian children over decades in a ‘shameful and protracted abuse of his authority’, has been jailed for 18 years and four months.

He will serve a minimum of 13 years and four months.

He assaulted a seven-year-old girl who was preparing for her first communion in 1969 in the first of “a truly appalling litany of offending” during which he exploited his position of trust.

Claffey went on to assault altar boys and children making preparations for religious ceremonies until 1992.

He pleaded guilty to 19 charges but the Victorian county court judge Felicity Hampel noted that he had offered no apology to his victims – nor shown any remorse.

Claffey was a “paedophilic sexual predator” who groomed parents and children by visiting families, establishing trust and threatening children to keep them quiet, the judge said.

That you were able to act with impunity for such a period speaks volumes for the power you exerted over your victims and the gross nature of the breach of trust of a priest in respect of the children of the parish. The consequences for your victims have been profound and, for many, lifelong.

Speaking outside court after the sentence was passed one of the victims said the sentence was just, fair and tantamount to a death penalty.

This is a person who subjected the children of western Victoria to unbridled and unbroken rape. Bob Claffey has taken a fair portion of everyone’s lives and he deserves to have a fair portion of his life taken from him.

Former Ballarat Bishop Ronald Mulkearns was earlier this year forced to give evidence at a Magistrates Court committal hearing in relation to Claffey’s case.

Mulkearns, who has previously avoided testifying in court because of ill health, has long been accused of being responsible for a widespread cover-up of abuse under his watch in Ballarat between 1971 and 1997.

While Mulkearns was Ballarat bishop hundreds of children were molested by notorious paedophiles within the Catholic Church.

Mulkearns has previously admitted mishandling cases of sexual abuse while in charge at Ballarat.

It has been alleged before the child abuse Royal Commission hearings that he routinely shuffled priests around the diocese after complaints were made about them.

It has also been alleged that Mulkearns destroyed documents relating to sexual abuse matters.

Giving evidence in Claffey’s hearing he conceded complaints were made about the priest. He said he remembered that Claffey:

Had been misbehaving … in a sexual way.

The court heard the father of one complainant told Mulkearns in 1989 his son had been having behavioural problems, and that Claffey had “misbehaved” with him.

According to court documents Bishop Mulkearns called a meeting with Claffey and the priest resigned, effective immediately.

Counselling was offered to the complainant’s family, but no other action was taken.

Egyptian TV presenter approves shooting of Jordanian writer

Added October 4, 2016

Reporting on the assassination a week ago of prominent Jordanian writer Nahed Hattar,  Hani Nahhas, above, of Alhadas Elyoum TV, told viewers that Hattar’s “blasphemy” did not count as free speech and that he deserved to ‘stand trial in God’s court.

They say [Hattar] is a martyr, killed for the sake of freedom of speech, but I do not think this way at all. You have the right to criticise a president, a prince, or a king, but you do not have the right to draw, to affront or to humiliate the Lord. I personally declare that I support the killing of Jordanian writer Nahed Hattar..

Hattar was assassinated on the steps of an Amman courthouse, where he was to face charges for having shared a supposedly blasphemous cartoon on social media.

Nahed Hattar’s accused killer, it later emerged, was a 49-year-old former imam from an impoverished neighborhood in the Jordanian capital. The offending image, which had prompted his arrest and myriad death threats, depicted God checking in on an extremist militant in heaven.

Hattar, a secular Christian, was arrested in August for sharing a cartoon on his Facebook page titled “the God of Daesh”, an alternative name for the Islamic State militant group. The creator of the cartoon is unknown.

The drawing showed a bearded man, lying in bed under sheets, smoking contentedly beside two women in paradise and jabbing his finger toward God, who asks, “Do you need anything?” The man replies:

Yes, Lord, bring me wine, cashews and an immortal servant to come clean the floor.

Hattar took the image down and tried to explain why he posted it. He said the cartoon was a depiction of the perverted beliefs of Islamic State militants and explained that that was how they imagine God and heaven, and that it does not insult God in any way.

Hattar also had been a steadfast backer of the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad, a sympathy that would have won him both friends and enemies in Jordan’s fractured political landscape.

Egyptian secular blogger Nervana Mahmoud wrote:

Now Assad’s pundits are using Hattar’s murder to warn Jordanians about the futility of Jordan’s alliance with the United States and the increasing attacks by ISIS supporters inside the Kingdom.

In short, the murder of Nahed Hattar is a triumph of religious escapism, intellectual cowardice, and political manipulation in a region that has lost its moral compass and descended into a dark space where bad is fighting bad with bad, only to produce more ugliness and despair.

Hattar’s wife, Randa Kakish-Hattar, spoke to reporters hours after his death:

I saw his lifeless, blood-drained body just now. His two children saw him shot and killed before their eyes. And for what? For sharing a cartoon on Facebook?

Wired to the moon: Iraq’s Transportation Minister

Added October 3, 2016

The ancient Sumerians were a pretty bright bunch, inventing stuff like writing and bookkeeping, board games, musical instruments, agriculture … and space travel, if Iraqi Transportation Minister Kadhum Finjan Al-Hamami is to be believed.

Unfortunately for Al-Hamami, his claim that the Sumerians built the earth’s first airport in Iraq 7,000 years ago and used it to send spaceships into space has exposed him to a considerable amount of ridicule.

“I swear to God, this isn’t a joke,” one Iraqi going by the pseudonym of Shimmariya Al-Iraq tweeted in disbelief.

Another user, Dawood Al-Basri, said.

Iraqi transport minister’s hallucinations about spaceships in Nasiriyah proves that the [Haidar] Al-Abadi government is full of fools, hashish addicts and the most worthless of humanity.

An Iraqi Al Jazeera journalist, Amer Al-Kubaisi, tweeted:

Can you believe that this imbecile is the current Iraqi transportation minister? I thank Allah for the blessing of a brain.

Al-Hamami said “the first airport that was established on planet earth was in this place,” indicating the city and climes surrounding Nasiriyah in Dhi Qar Province, 370 kilometres southeast of the capital Baghdad.

Not content with this bold claim, Al-Hamami added that angels “were all Sumerian” and that:

Sumerian spaceships used to launch from here towards the other planets.

Al-Hamami sought to back up his claims by asking sceptics to study the works of Sumerian experts such as Russian professor Samuel Noah Kramer.

The academic wrote about the Sumerian awareness of the solar system evident in the ancient society’s creation myths.

The Sumerians represent the oldest known civilization in Iraq and according to historians reached their peak in 2,700-2,400 BCE when Iraq – or ancient Mesopotamia –was regarded as the “cradle of civilisation”.

Atheism has ancient roots and is not ‘modern invention’

Added April 1, 2016

Atheism is not a modern invention from the western Enlightenment, but actually dates back to the ancient world, according to a new book by a Cambridge academic – which challenges the assumption that humanity is naturally predisposed to believe in gods.

In Battling the Gods, Tim Whitmarsh, professor of Greek culture at Cambridge University, lays out a series of examples showing that atheism existed in polytheistic ancient Greece. It is, according to its author, partly “an attempt to excavate ancient atheism from underneath the rubble heaped on it by millennia of Christian opprobrium”.

Early atheists were making what seem to be universal objections about the paradoxical nature of religion. Disbelief in the supernatural is as old as the hills. It is only through profound ignorance of the classical tradition that anyone ever believed that 18th-century Europeans were the first to battle the gods.

“We tend to see atheism as an idea that has only recently emerged in secular western societies. The rhetoric used to describe it is hyper-modern. In fact, early societies were far more capable than many since of containing atheism within the spectrum of what they considered normal,” said Whitmarsh.

“Rather than making judgments based on scientific reason, these early atheists were making what seem to be universal objections about the paradoxical nature of religion – the fact that it asks you to accept things that aren’t intuitively there in your world. The fact that this was happening thousands of years ago suggests that forms of disbelief can exist in all cultures, and probably always have.”

In the fourth century BC, he points to Plato, as the philosopher imagines a believer chastising an atheist:

“You and your friends are not the first to have held this view about the gods! There are always those who suffer from this illness, in greater or lesser numbers.”

“We may balk at his disease imagery,”

writes Whitmarsh,

“but Plato was surely right in his general point. There have been many throughout history and across all cultures who have resisted belief in the divine.”

Because you disbelieved things that are not unbelievable, your name from now on shall be Disbeliever (Apistos)
The god Asclepius, to a man who mocked miracle cures
These range from Carneades, head of the Platonic academy in the second century BC, who argued that

“belief in gods is illogical”,

to the Epicureans, who were often called atheoi in antiquity, and the atheistic writings of Xenophanes of Colophon.

Whitmarsh argues that the diversity of ancient Greece’s polytheistic societies meant there was no such thing as religious orthodoxy, and no clergy laying out how people should live. This meant, he said, that while atheism could be viewed as mistaken, it was usually tolerated – although not in the case of Socrates, who was executed in Athens for “not recognising the gods of the city.

Ehdotus lukion opetuksen järkiperäistämiseksi

Suomen Ateistiyhdistys ry. kannattaa kaikkien mielipideaineiden poistamista kouluista. Erityisesti oman uskonnon opetus on mielipideopetusta.
